Title: What MPG do you get?
Post by: minid0m on 31 March 2005, 00:28
How many MPG's do you all get on average? On either 8 or 16v  MK2 Gti's Or miles per tank?

The reason why I'm asking is to find out if mine is using too much fuel. I filled up last week and for the first half of the tank I have managed to get 150 miles. I'm hoping to get 300 miles from the tank, but I think this is going to be wishfull thinking.

I do cain the car when its warm but never hit the rev limiter, when I find an empty bit of road.

So what do you get from a tank;

1. When you cain it.
2. Average driving
3. Occasional fast driving?
4. What about using stantard unleaded or super?
5. Do aftermarket air filter's improve fuel consumption.

Interested to see the answers.

300 miles off a tank if I'm sensible.
Running on 97 RON

probably about 36 mpg when I go very sensible
about 15 mpg when I cane it

I am on my third 8 valver. I am very disappointed with the fuel consumption of my present car. Tankful can get me 350 miles, works out at best 34MPG and worst 30MPG. My last two cars averaged 38MPG and I could get 41MPG when driving very carefully (not very often). My fuel consumption on my present car has improved slightly to the 34MPG figure since I replaced the thermostat, it had been stuck slightly open. I do get a strong smell of fuel when driving with the sunroof open so I think I may have a problem somewhere, however, seems I may just have been lucky with my last 2 Gti's getting on average 38MPG. Be interesting to hear what others are managing to get.

I get about 36mpg out of my 8v when driven normaly. Giving it some beans and it does about 20mpg.

This is going on calculations rather than the MFA which is screwed and reads WAY too low!

On petrol my 16v used to do 300 miles a tank, spot on more or less everytime. A tank cost £38 quid.

On LGP, i get 300 miles out of o tank, but that only cost £22

Only another 6000 miles till I have paid off the conversion!

That'll be £10 worth of fuel put in by the better half Wotto?

Best case scenario 37mpg and worst case 24mpg, some days are happy 70/80 mph days and others are dumb o'clock at 90+mph sprint runs across the Chiltern Hills.

All our cars are set to run on Optimax unleaded, the demo vehicle also runs a slightly re-mapped engine management, in total we've gained an approx 20/30 miles per a tank full.

All of the above figures are based on a 8v GTi model, with a fairly healthy engine.

My MFA averages 25mpg when I'm out delivering pizza, but on a run it'll do 44mpg according to the MFA.  The most I've got out of it was when I drove to West Wales and back and it did 440 miles on a full tank of optimax.  My usual town driving means I fill up after 250 miles, which is pretty poor!

My MFA is giving a very low MPG, prob due to a leak in the vacuum hose feeding it, that i havn't nothered to fix yet, but using the pen and paper method I average about 32mpg, 300+ miles to a tank with a variety of driving, and roads, speeds etc.

Car pulls smoother and harder using Optimax, no doubt.

Kust fitted a K&N, and not sure on consumption yet, doubt there will be much difference, but sounds a little better.

1. When you cain it.
25 ish..

2. Average driving

average around town.. 10-15 on my work commute through traffic etc etc..

average on A-Roads.. 25 ish .. unless its slow moving then it might creep up

average on motorway.. 35 ish if sticking to the limit..

basically i find conistent driving in high gears at low revs the way to push it up..
the long you are consistent (as long as not consistently booting it) the economy goes up

3. Occasional fast driving?

25 ish

4. What about using stantard unleaded or super?
i'm using optimax.

5. Do aftermarket air filter's improve fuel consumption.
no idea.

I agree with Overseer, keep it consistant and high gears/low revs.

I'm currently trying to get 400 miles out of my tank (trying to reduce from 5 fillups per month to 4), 200 miles just over half a tank and MFA reports 34mpg, so looking good.

Doesn't this talk of economy defeat the point of owning a GTI ? might as well have a diesel Fiesta ! LOL

Don't think my K&N filter has helped my fuel economy at all, however my stainless steel exhaust system has improved economy on a run by a few mpg.

Organisys! Decent fuel economy means we can spend more time driving our dubs before running out of money!

I'd love a V8 powered beast but I'd never afford the petrol!

1. bout 19mpg
2. not sure how to work it out ive never driven it normally
3. bout 130miles to £20
4. only ever use optimax
5. ive taken mine off cos it reduced my fuel consumption and restricted the car

hey all,

all this talk of 300 miles to a tank on a 8v is getting me really worried!!!
ive just driven glasgow to aberdeen which is 160miles and that took me near enough 1 full tank. Now im hoping that for some reason my tank is half the size of all yours!!it cost about £20 for a full tank on my car, is that around the same as all yours?? its motorway driving so im goin 70mph and the revs are about 3-4 but i dont think this counts as caining it.

id be interested to see if my cars f**ked or if its just a smaller tank size.

cheers all

swinie, costs me about £40 to fill my tank and I get about 350 between refills. You must have a hell of a wee tank. I do the Glasgow to Aberdeen run now and again and it is possible to get good MPG on that run, there are so many speed cameras between Dundee and Aberdeen, you can't speed.

To be fair, the economy on my 8v is very good, especially when driving 'sensibly' I can get 350 miles to a tank for £40 ish.

Compare that to my V6 Syncro, which does around 300 miles to a tank for about £50 !! (I dont drive it 'sensibly') unless I get on a long Motorway trip.

Yeah, and I don't even need to stop or slow down! as long as its over 2500revs then the switch is faultless(ish)

Well I made it,

413 miles on 1 tank of petrol, my calcs make that 38 MPG, although my MFA said it was 33.2.
Still well within the redline when I filled up, I reckon I had another 5 litres of fuel left (I'm pretty sure my tanks 55 litres) So I could have done another 40 miles.

The fuel gauge is great all the way to half a tank then it's up and down like a swingometer.

Almost great news, only broken when half way through filling up I noticed the cost per litre 93.9!! a jump of 8p in a week :(

I got 150 miles out of £20 commuting to work which is only a 12 mile round trip also with a strong smell of fuel coming throught vents and sunroof!

On longer trips can get much more out of it.

chris8valve, you are getting a strong smell of fuel coming throught vents and sunroof! I also have this problem and several others who post on this forum. Can someone please help. I have absolutely no trace of a fuel leak anywhere, I have checked everywhere. I have replaced the fuel filler cap and checked every fuel connection.
