Title: Discounting dealers?
Post by: Exonian on 22 May 2011, 13:34
I was just about to head outside to wash the car when I got a text from a mate.
He'd been meaning to get hold of me for a while apparently  and is looking to order a new Golf GTD 5 door.
So anyone who has recently ordered or is in the middle of sounding out dealers I'd really appreciate any feedback on what deals are around.
I've only had a brief text message conversation with him but it sounds like the following: 5 door GTD needed, it's not going to be on a PCP deal or anything as he's an engineer doing biggish miles. His company will pay for it but outright, cash(?). And he will need to chop in his present car (which I'm assuming was paid for by the company as he's been there ages); a mk5 Golf GT Sport TDI. So a broker is no good owing to the part ex situation.
He said not many extras as his boss won't pay for them except maybe xenons which he really wants as he is out in all weather and day and night.
He wants a Golf which his boss has okayed in theory but has been told to get out there and get the best deal himself as his boss doesn't normally buy VW stuff.

I think a pre-reg'd newish car is okay too. He said he's been through the VW used cars and there are no GTDs with Xenons, hence he's wondering if I knew of any deals going.
I offered him my GTI but he said his boss was too tight to pay for the fuel mileage!

At the moment there are 7 in country brand new all have leather except 1. As you know the leather is 1800 quid and its rubbish IMO , trust me I have scoured the country for a GTD without leather there's none, he will have to do a factory order me thinks, but ask Evo he may come up with something??

Thanks Steve, I was hoping you'd be along to reply!
I was thinking about emailing Lee directly but I didn't want to bother him as I'm just a middle man here. I will pass on Lee's contact details to my mate as I have his email addy saved. However I don't think the Inchcape group are very keen on doing discounts and from what I can gather I don't think my mate's boss is the sort of person to pay list for anything! He's a man after my own heart

I did recommend a new Leon FR+ which has Xenons and a decent spec as standard but I've not heard anything back on that score for a couple of hours. There's a lovely Speed Blue Leon FR tdi DSG in a dealership not far from me that's very competatively priced which I was thinking about myself recently but he seems to want a Golf GTD or nothing.

Can't blame him.

Can you get some more info on his mk5 Golf GT Sport TDI as I may buy it if it helps

Ooh are you interested in a deal Doc? I've just asked him for the mileage, I know the other bits and bobs, 5 door Steel Grey TDI 170. Basic spec I think as he uses a Tom Tom and I don't remember any fancy bits of spec on it. 17'' Classix-X or whatever they're called wheels.
I reckon about 70 odd thou on it, and it's a 2008 car!

Obviously the time must be coming to move the Carbon GTD on? What's the miles etc on yours?

I've found the leather to be absolutely fine on mine and it does add a touch of class to the interior imo. Had a mk5 with leather and the quality has  improved imo.

Thanks Mr_F, I'm not sure how many posts you need to make on here to PM so just talk a bit of nonsense in a few of the threads to bump you post count up a bit, I'll lead you in on another thread too and we'll soon be there! I'll try a test PM in a minute too.

It was Taunton SEAT and it has just sold. Not to me either! Newton Abbot are a good bunch down there, I agree, they've always been one of the better dealers.

Okay, info back last night: 78,000 miles! Full VWSH and, as above, Steel Grey 5 door with standard spec plus dealer fitted cruise control. 2.0 170 pd engine. It always looks very tidy when I've seen it.

I know nobody is really interested but I thought I'd update the thread anyway.
He's phoned around about two dozen VW dealers all over the country, very little discounts available and long long lead times thanks to the Xenons it seems. So he tried pricing cars up minus the xenons such as low mileage ones in group stock and none would give him a decent part ex price on his Golf. So he's ordered a Mazda 3 hatchback which from the phone photo he sent me looks a bit like an MPS but is a Diesel.
It's in stock, white and goes like poop off a shovel, he tells me.

At least he's sorted.

Trouble with VW's supply/prices is that it moves people out of the brand to one that has stock and will entertain a discount.

If VW wants to lose customers, it has a very good strategy being seen through.

Sorry to hear about your mate converting to a Dark Japanese side.

Although I may be tempted by a Japanese Nissan GTR, which I got to sit in well before they were over here.

Thanks for your advice though Mr_F

And it has to be said, from the very limited things you've said on here......you seem to get around a bit don't you? Fair play to you!   :round of applause smiley:

It's got a good engine, but the car looks ...... how should I phrase it kindly ...... UGLY.
A bit like an out-of-sorts Geisha who's been in a crash.

That's probably about the only Geisha I'd ever be able to afford the services of and at least she doesn't come with a 9 month gestation period and charge extra for all her little 'services'  :smug:

I did a bit of research on it as I'm nosey and a bit bored; 2.2 Diseasel and 185bhp stock, so it should be a very quick pig ugly free car.

My next door neighbour has a Mazda 3 too, I often think that the styling was done by the YTS lad on a Monday when he had the hangover from hell.

It's one of the few Diesel hatches I have driven. That engine is a real goer unlike Geishas who are more show than go. However, the ride reminds me of a Geisha in her very odd foot coverings negotiating a crowded Tokyo street in the snow.

BTW they cost $500 - $1000 (depending on seniority) to just have tea. Our hookers are so much cheaper.
