I'm looking to update the firmware (and possibly v7 maps) on my RNS510 (the car was registered Sep 2009 and comes with the ver.5 maps DVD). I can't find out what version of firmware I have as the "push the set-up button for +15 second method" has not been enabled in vagcom. I've decided to invest in the vcds gubbins...does the following look good, having read this subject to death the cheapo versions on ebay are not appropriate but the below seems to be akin to the Rosstech one???

im pretty much in the same boat as you and am trying to get a copy of v7 maps (mainly for the 7 digit postcodes).
ive thought about a set of leads myself and those look pretty cheap. If you do get them, be good to know how you get on with them as the ones I have been offered are nearly double that!!
Cheers

Although it's not MK6 GTI specific, here's a brilliant thread listing all manner of different settings and cables which is kept very up to date. It's obviously for mk2 Leons, but as the FL versions have a huge number of common parts with the mk6 Golf there is much to be learned in there. Go to the higher page numbers for the current recommended cables.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything other than a genuine Ross Tech cable.

Has per Steves comment,
I personally wouldn't buy off eBay either unless the likes of Gendan or other Ross Tech resellers where on ebay.

Thanks for advice folks and quick update for benefit of Jester. I've still not got round to buying the VCDS lead yet but decided to upgrade firmware regardless of knowing what version was installed, the car was registered circa Sep 09.
I'm pleased to say all went well with FW upgare to 276X as was done by following this link (looked at loads but this one made sense to me given I have trouble programing the central heating).

I've also put 7.1 maps on and the 7 digit post code is working a treat along with POI etc. Both processes take circa 50 minutes each. Another bonus is rather than having to enable the hidden set up menu in VCDS it's now there with the new firmware, I've no idea what half of it means but have posted some grainy pictures below , the last screen shows a text file date which is interesting. Next step will be to update to 3810.

Where/how do you get hold of 7.1 maps?

Official VW DVD for circa £200. I have heard of credible versions floating around on t'internet depending on your copyright moral standing
