Title: When to give up?
Post by: LPG'd Oakie on 30 March 2005, 09:48
When do you finally give up and realise that your car is never going to be as mint as you want it to be?

Just fixed my drooping door problem, to find that the door now sticks out about 1/4 inch from the body. That and when cleaning i found more scratches, car park dents and large chips than I ever remember.

Oh well :undecided:

I know what you mean, I'm going through exactly the same thing at the moment. I'm trying to sort out bits and bobs but keep uncovering other little bits and bobs that I didn't know about and were not there before the winter.

Your problem on the door, which side does it stick out at ? If it sticks out at the door handle side you can adjust the nut that's on the interior door pillar on the door pin bit, I dont know what you'd call it. Anyway, this nut when loosened should allow the pin to move up and down and side to side and you can adjust it accordingly, had the same on mine the other month after I had some bodywork done when a neighbour pranged it, I thought they had misalligned the panel but they adjusted this nut and it now sits flush.

i've been there many times before! how much effort is it worth putting in for what your gonna get out? why can't my car be as mint as the ones you see in magazines? how can other people afford to put there car in a body shop with a seemingly unlimited budget?
i constantly find sh!tty bits on my car and they get me down every now and then but you have to be realistic. daily drivers will always get a bit battered over the years. and even some of the 'show cars' aren't as good as they look in the flesh.

i do the chips myself.. i try to maintain the paint, wheels, leather etc as well as possible..

have developed quite a good technique for doing small chips and scrapes

*touch wood* i dont have any 'parking dents' i do have obvious marks where doors have been opened into my car..
i'll do those when i'm doing chips..

really need a non-sunny but kinda warm day to do chips as its back breaking and fiddly..

I ordered a touch up kit from vw and it took three weeks to arrive from germany!

Going to have a go at some stone chips this weekend if the weather's ok.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I think this subject applies to a lot of people including my self... i used to own a mk 2 golf black 3 door GTI 8v which i owned for 8 months which i really enjoyed... the 8v was a fun car... Then my mate took me for a drive in a 16v, again a mk2 and wooow... i was having one from this point.

So i few weeks i cover an 500mile round trip to buy and 1989 mk2 gti 16v 3 door black... full service history, 1 lady owner, 89000 miles, 1 year MOT, no body work damage apart from a tiny bit of rust which can be sorted...

So i purchased the car and a 3 weeks later a new customised exhaust system, K & N and a dyno tune was applied and it was great fun.

Then a week later some1 had stuck they boot into the front wing, made a mess and a few days after a huge scratch appeared!!!

So i have just purchased a new wing today which should be fitted next week the scratch is still be sorted...

I'll attached some photos soon when its all sorted again...

Gaz

stone chip and scratch tip.
Get the paint on thin, use a mop and if needed compound, do it about 3 times or so, slowly layer by layer.

Nothing worse than a big bloob of paint sticking up, even more noticeble than a chip.
