Hi guys...yesterday i was driving to work and for sum reason i cant engage 5th gear.
It seems to engage when car is off and standing still but could be wrong...when its moving and i try to go from 4th to 5th its like there's no movement at all to the right.
All other gears engage just fine...

Could be your gear linkage
-
would that be under the stick gaitor or under the by the gearbox ?
-
5th gear fork possibly
-
Do a search for adjusting the linkage as a 1st step.
-
i've been looking but it's all going straight over my head mate...gonna have the gear gaitor off tomorrow and root around and see it anything has come loose

Assuming 8v and rod change - get yourself a setting tool from the bay for about a fiver:
Remove gaiter, fit tool, slacken allen bolt and rotate until correct play: it's possible yours has worn/slipped and it's preventing the lever from moving the correct throw to select fifth.
You need to establish though if it's physically not moving far enough right to get 5th (ie is it actually any different with engine off).
I'd also have a look around the linkages under the bonnet onto the back of the gearbox and check everything is connected, you'll see a couple of white plastic links snapped onto ball joints at each end (look like dog bones). Make sure they're properly fitted and not obviously worn.

i'll have a proper poke about tomorrow morning...didnt really know what to look for so appreciate ur imput

I had exactly the same problem on my Mk 2 (same gearbox) and it was a small white platic gear linkage which had broken. It basically looks like a 3 inch long little 'bone' at the back of gearbox where the gearbox linkages are below the bulkhead. Have a hunt around with the bonnet up. New ones only cost a couple of quid from VW.
Good luck!

+1 If it's an 8v than this will be it. THe little platic cups split and you lose enough travel int he linkage to select 5th. A new set from GSF is about £2.
