Ok, so have been getting a knocking noise from the front end recently and haven't really investigated it yet but was looking under the bonnet and saw this:

What is that behind the CV boot? A mount of some sort? Gearbox? Also should it be leaking like that?

looks like the gearbox mount, theres nothing inside it its just rubber so not sure what it could be? Maybe something dripping onto it?

gearbox mount matey if you need one got plenty of mint ones
-
Probably full of water and muck being pumped out as the engine wiggles.
I have seen oil filled mounts but not on a mk3........
When gone this will give you noise and vibration which is very annoying, mines buggered too
Front one is probably gone too just like mine

Cheers guys, so the consensus is that the gearbox mount is knackered? Is that likely to be causing knocking though? I'm also guessing that it is a sod to replace?

It does cause knocking, but do check the front mount as the new one wont last long if its f'ed.
Only the rear is a bugger to do, fronts can be done in a couple of hours with a jack and a good set of sockets and spanners

Cheers, I'll have a good look at the front as well :afro:

My gearbox mount looked the same with grease coming out of it.
-
One more thing, is it worth buying genuine?
-
Hydraulic gearbox mount, just had to replace mine. 15 quid from gsf.
-
And there is a guide for it somewhere. I sheared the bolt though getting it off and had to get a bolt from a dealer, 2 quid!
-
The mount is hydraulic so if it is leaking then it is knackered.
-
As I mentioned in your other thread, the gearbox mount is really easy to change and the front engine mount isn't much harder. Only the rear engine mount is a fiddly f**k*r to get access to undo the bolts.
-
Yea these rear mounts are full of oil, that one is simple to change, just jack it up, unbolt the top bracket and swap.
