Title: GTI sounding like a tractor - now cured ££££££££
Post by: arr on 18 May 2011, 19:26
Like several people I’ve complained about my gti sounding like a tractor, I’d say sounding like a diesel but that would just be insulting most modern diesels!

http://s296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/hbuyer2005/vw/?action=view&current=gtisound.mp4 - link shameless stolen from another post but mine sounded exactly the same, mines black too!

Once the engine was warm on idle it would sound real ruff and that diesel noise wouldn't disappear until doing over 20mph, just so annoying and embarrassing at traffic lights, it was nice and quiet when the engine was cold. My cars a 2005 gti axx engine code.  So as everyone said I ordered my cam chain and tensioner and booked it in to my local vw specialist, they'd never heard of the problem before or ever changed one on a mk5 so they ordered the tools in specially that vw recommend to do the job.  Dropped the car off 1st thing in the morning, should be ready late afternoon, rang up late afternoon, car not ready - didn't have all the locking tools. Tool ordered from vw be here first thing in the morning. Rang up the next day late afternoon, they'd come across a slight problem. New chain and tensioner fitted but car sounded exactly the same, they'd even taken it off and put it back on again to see if something was not right first time. Chain was as tight as it would go. They'd taken it out for a test drive and everything was fine, power still there, not a problem with it apart from that noise. On closer inspection there was a problem with the camshaft (bent I think), so a new camshaft adjuster kit was ordered (£279.48). Next day that was fitted, got a phone call tea time to say it was ready! Was shown the broken bits and asked if I wanted to keep them when he was explaining it all to me. And the bill..... well they did me a bit of discount as a regularly customer and the cock up of the locking tool, originally it would have just been £300 to replace cam tensioner kit as I supplied the parts and 5 hours labour to fit it, the camshaft adjuster kit cost £279.48 plus 3 hours labour totalling £515.38 so the total bill was £815.38!!!!
And after all that the car is amazing! So quiet on idle, feels more responsive - its like a different car, so happy with it, its how a gti should be. But as my brother in law did point out £815 is a lot of money to fix a rattle

4 months worth of petrol.
A bargain for full sort-out of an older car.

Hi arr,

I'm in the same situation as yourself, don't think the noise on mine is as bad though..it's only on idle ( when the engine is warmed up) but fades as soon as the car starts to move.

Anyway, I some brilliant info in your post, thanks..any chance you have the part number for the adjuster? I understood that tHis part was the adjuster for the timing chain?the same part that's referred to in this thread:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=115268.120 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=115268.120)

I'm guessing the cam shaft couldn't have been actually bent, as if so it would have caused further damage, and would have need to have been replaced?

Cheers

My car had exactly the same symptoms as the linked thread. We've had the car since it was two years old and it didn't make that noise when we bought it and whilst under warranty, its just gradually got worse over the years. This past year its really bugged me and I fell out of love with the car, but now its sorted I love it again.
It might have been the camshaft adjuster that was bent, can't remember a 100% as it was a couple of weeks ago. I just remember something was bent. The guy went into quite technical detail when he was explaining it and I only have so much mechanical knowledge, but I think he thought I knew what he was talking about, I was just thinking this sounds expensive!
I have the part numbers for the chain and tensioner as my brother in law works in the trade and he ordered all the bits from tps, the guy from tps knew which bits we needed as he'd had exactly the same problem on his audi with the same engine in and a new chain and tensioner sorted it.
chain -      part no. S06D109229B    RRP £42.06
tensioner - part no. S06F109217A    RRP £66.53
gasket -    part no. 06D103121B      RRP  £4.13
seal -        part no. 06E127248       RRP  £5.57
gasket -     part no. 06F103483D    RRP  £15.61
Think they were all the bits needed as on my receipt I had some bits for my service so hopefully I haven't included anything that shouldn't be there or missed anything out

That's temping me now! If I can find someone half decent to put it on, the parts aint too expensive.

Was your engine code AXX?

I was even thinking to find a GTi breaking and get the parts? But if new parts are as listed, why bother? I'm guessing the cost is in the labour!

Thanks for the reply arr, those parts are cheap enough, but if I understand it, you also fitted the adjuster kit, which is expensive..do you have the part no. For this also? Cheers

That's great news, sounds like you might of got away with just the cam-shaft adjuster kit as that's what seems to of cured your noise?

My '05 sounded a bit like a diesel from the outside but not as rattley as my 1.9PD Leon
filling up with 99 octane petrol(the Golf, not the Leon!!) brought a huge improvment.
