Ok back again! For those that dont remember it is a P reg Golf Gti 8v that is giving me HELL.
Cutting out has gone from occuring intermittently and restarting immediatley to cutting out after about 7 miles when it has heated up and having to be stopped then starting again but cutting out after that every 800 yards unless you leave it to cool.
So far it has had
a full service,
new distributor after showing up faulty on a diagnostic test,
a new crank sensor,
cleaned throttle body,
another diagnostic that showed the new distributor which had burnt out?,
2nd new distributor,
a call out to AA who tried replacing the coil but that didnt work either so they put the old one back in
and it has a new relay 30.
Any more ideas? The problem is getting worse. Phoned the local Vdub garage and they said bring it in for a diagnostic £60 feel like I'm banging my head against a wall. Oh and please keep it simple I am but a girl!

Have you had the engine temp sensor changed ,dont think they are that expensive

It's the crank sensor 99% sure. This is the symptoms of a cheap one I had exact same probs with my cheap one.

Really a cheap one could do this? I will find out which one was fitted. Did you have the same probelm then? What were your symptoms?

Mine wasnt on the road at the time as i bought it as a non runner, but i could start it an let it tick over on the drive it would last around 15-20mins then cut out, restart, cut out and so on. but if i left it for 10 mins then restart it would run for around 5mins, the longer i left it the longer it would run for, but never more than 20mins.
Got a oe quality crank sensor localy and fitted it, the car ran for about 3 hours non stop and never had a problem since.

The crank sensor is defo worth replacing with an genuine one

Yep it definatley sounds like the same problem. Thank you for your help it is much appreciated. I figured this place would be the best for advice! I'm a bit cheesed off if this is the case seeing as I have already had this done but I had both the AA recovery dude and a mechanic tell me that they don't even have them and weren't overly impressed at being proved wrong :-/
Thanks again I'll try this
