Title: DVLA private reg help?
Post by: mellow yellow on 17 May 2011, 15:09
years and years ago i sold my car with the private reg on and had a signed agreement with the buyer to transfer the reg to me, he had his own private number to go on so this worked out for both of us.

The only way he could do it was to put me as a nominee on my number when he swapped them over, this was all done and i got a form through and all was well.

Now this was a few years back and due to me not wanting my plate on sheddy cars that i had in between then and my golf i never got it onto a vehicle, i cannot find any documents for the plate, moved house etc etc and things have got lost.

I've tried to contact dvla and finally got to talk to a human, and was promptly told they cannot talk to me about it as i'm not the certificate holder.

does anybody know where i will stand with the reg plate? i've e-mailed the guy who i sold the car to but i'm not holding my breath for him to be helpful, in all fairness its not his problem and my fault for not addressing this earlier.

thing is the reg was a 21st present from my family and i would like it back on my car.

if it hasnt  been kept on retention it could have been resold to someone else.

my folks let one lapse, and thankfully no one had bought it but it took them many letters etc to get it back

good luck,

i've checked on ask mid and its not on a vehicle at the moment.

i cant think anyone else would want it, its particular to my surname which is not very common at all, so touch wood  :undecided:

on the plus side i've had an e-mail from the dude who bought my car, he's not heard anything since the original docs where sent but he's gonna call the dvla

no,it effiectevely goes back onto the market.

if the owner reapplies and pays the fee £45 i think , then it can be put back onto certificate

Go to one of the Cherished registration websites, and enter your number, see what comes up, worst comes to worst, you may be able to re buy it...

been on a few and i can't find it for sale, hopefully its just a case of paying the back fees and slapping it on my car but probably a lot more to it than that.

GOOD NEWS!

the docs are on their way back to me, signed and ready to transfer the reg back onto my car  to say i'm chuffed is an understatement.

just need to get the plates made up now...

a quick query, is it illegal to have the plates shortened width ways if i keep to legal font, sizing and spacing?  so instead of [  A10 XTB  ]    it will be   [A10 XTB]

taken from dvla...

Number plates fitted after 1st September 2001

Any number plate made up after 1st September 2001 must meet the dimensions as below:

Character Height 79 mm
Character Width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 50 mm
Character stroke 14 mm
Space between characters 11 mm
Space between groups 33 mm
Top, bottom, and side margins (minimum) 11 mm
Space between vertical lines 19 mm

so i guess if i keep 11mm around the sides like kells says i should be ok?

any pics of yours chuff? i don't wanna attract any unwanted attention by the police.

I had mine made up this way, they are legal.

passed all MOTs with them too

as for shep, whats stupid about it ? its a legal plate, legal spaced and legal lettering!! nothing more nothing less ?  just dont see point in a load of blank plate when its not needed?

We cant all like then same thing can we? or we would all be driving round in silly gay Vauxhall chav boxes

If you're running shortened plates it's a good idea to carry a print out of the plate guidelines to prove they are legal if you are stopped. People with shortened plates over here do so because most cops don't know the ins and outs of number plate sizing, so it's an easy way to keep things hassle free.

just ordered some from here...

http://www.dmb.uk.com/cart.php

requested them to have legal font and spacing with shorter ends but still displaying the BS mark in the corner.  £22.00 for the pair delivered. Just waiting on the transfer docs and the plates to arrive then they will be put on after a trip to beverley dvla.

A mate had black and silver plates on his mk5 GTI. got rid of them quickly because even the lax Irish cops didn't like them
