Title: NickH-D's 87 GTi MK2
Post by: NickH-D on 17 May 2011, 12:09
Just bought myself a '87 Golf GTi, this is exactly how it came, so work needs doing, new bumpers will most likely be the first job (if anybody has a cheap set of nice small/big bumpers that I can replace the current ones with, please let me know!)

how much work is power steering? I'm gonna have arms like pop-eye if I have to keep turning this wheel!

intended work so far;

- CLEAN - give it a good wash, and see what I'm left with lol
- bumper replacement
- paintjob (once new bumpers fitted)
- I was considering taking away the gti trim, but I've decided to keep it, and give it a refresh
- new wheels (Calibre Vintage) - this will be one of the last things, as it does already have alloys and it doesn't NEED new ones

as it stands:

That looks like a relatively clean car. Shouldn't be too much work to get it looking good.

The panels that had rust/damage/holes etc have already been filled/sanded etc (i.e. the light grey patches), so the bodywork is already quite tidy, no rust etc, not bad overall for 23 years old!

I could technically just re-adjust the current bumpers to make them fit properly if I wanted to do totally budget, which is an option (as I also run a '60 plate corsa and my wifes '59 plate fiat 500 lol), but if I can find some cheap originals with splitters, I'd be very very happy :)

lol yea as said the bumpers are the first things to change, the rear will change too as it doesn't fit flush. How do I open a project page, I went into that section but theres no 'New Topic' like the other sections, am I just being dense?  :rolleyes:

Primer = water absorbent.

Strip it all off and re-work to top coat, or you'll never get a good finish on that.

Got myself rear clear lights instead of the smoked set, so will look at installing them, also got a donor headunit and sub/amp that we took out of my wife's Beetle project when we sold it. I wouldn't usually be too fussed about installing the sub etc, but at the moment it's just sat in our house taking up the corner of a bedroom, so I may aswell connect it!

Also priced up new front/rear bumpers, with splitters (thanks for the link Thom), so as soon as I finish the website project I'm working on, they'll be ordered :D once they're fitted, next job will be trim, arches and paintjob :)

Just a thought...

If the steering is uber heavy you may have seized top-mount bearings, something thats easily missed by a garage from personal experience. Unfortunately if you jack it up and try the steering, all the weight is off the suspension so it will turn freely anyway.

It may just be me getting used to power steering and dry steering when I probably shouldn't, I doubt these things react quite so well ;)

I've got the guys at work to check it over, they maintain all the military vehicles etc, so they generally know what they're doing, they said mechenaically we're all good, and aesthetics are more less paintwork, there is very little rust etc, so I'm still well chuffed for my £350

I'm round by Aldi and the doctors down Foundry Lane.

Mines only a lowly mk3 8v, seen how the mk2 boys like to take the mick out of the old tug boats lol  :grin:

I might have to make a small diversion on my way home tonight to see if I can see it!

Small bumpers, put it back original. You may even make some money from the front bumper - some people have no taste.

haha, had to chuckle a little.

to befair, the guy who fitted it original obviously bought it, so somebody else out there may do!

Will stick the bumper up on ebay once I get my originals.

I gotta break the trend and think that you paid too much. the money for a re-spray is well more than 3 times what you paid for it, surely you could of a got a cleaner, less chavved up one for £800ish?

Mechanically sound or not thats guna cost some money to get it looking right - Unless of course you are just guna respray yourself?

EDIT: just read your guna get it down pro, plus you gotta get some decent rims - easily another £500 :/

Well its been a little while, but a bit of progress has been made on the golf..

The fugly bumpers have been removed and a set of original gti small bumpers have been fitted, although I need new spacers to get them fitted 100% but it already looks so much better. I've also managed to swap out the wheels, the black ones are sat on my 60plate corsa for now, which actually go with the car pretty well, and the golf is now sat on 15" steelies.

I am looking to do paintwork myself now, my theory is I cannot make it any worse, so I'm going to give it a crack, I've done odd panels and spoilers before so I'll just take the golf panel by panel, may even try a small respray on the wheels too once colour has been confirmed.

Will try and put up a pic or two, but work is finally underway!

Thanks,

I intend to get some bits together to try out my bodywork restoration, I'll probably use the bonnet as my starting point as it has a little rust on the front lip (not alot by any means, just a small bubble), but it will at least see what kind of finish I can achieve before I tackle the rest of the car :)
