Title: VR6 thirsty?
Post by: tekelili on 29 March 2005, 14:29
Hi,

I am real keen to upgrade to a VR6 (from a Mk3 16v)

I do a 20 mile (each way) commute - do you guys think Im gonna be substantially hurting from the increased fuel consumption?

TIA

Rgds

A gallon is 4.54609 litres.  If petrol costs 83p per litre, thats £3.77 per gallon.

If you divide this by your mpg you get the cost of petrol per mile.

When i had a mk3 16v i averaged 30mpg so thats 12.6 pence per mile

My VR6 averages 26 mpg so thats 14.5 pence per mile

A difference of 1.9 pence per mile

40 miles a day, thats an extra 76p per day.

If you did 20,000 miles in a year it would cost you £380 extra a year in petrol.

Obviously your average consumption will probably be slightly different in both cars, but you get the idea.

And no, of course i'm not bored at work today!

Don't forget to fator in the extra insurane cost over the milieage to. Oh yeah and the extra rubber you'll no doubt shred when you hit the loud peddle with an evil grin on your face.

This is true.  My tyres were new in the first week of january and have only covered 4,000 miles and they are half worn down already

I bought some Toyo Proxes and they're a bit soft!  They do grip well though.

I'm sure I have read somewhere that its a good idea to get one with Aircon as the VR6 kicks out a fair bit of heat...Ain't got one so cannot speak form experience.

Anyway, if you do get one with AC that will also affect the fuel economy.

Good Man!  You won't regret it

AC is definately a good idea, in any car i think.

I find the having the AC on makes very little difference to the mpg.  Maybe 1-2 mpg less max.  It seems to be a very efficient system, probably due to it being a big and quite powerful engine.

Sounds very nice.

Go and have a look if it's close.

£3,400 sounds like a fair price too.

Its just as well the engine size has nothing to do with the temperature the cabin will reach.
Otherwise i would really be cooking in my vr6 with no aircon

Cooking on gas VR6, does the temperature of the engine effect the size of you portions?  :undecided:  :undecided:
