had same prob on mine ages ago. turned out to be the o2 sensor (lambda sensor) get vag com on to it, that will give you more details
-
where is the lambda sensor and isit easy to change?
-
Lambda sensor is probe attached to the front pipe.
Worth disconnecting the lambda sensor see if it runs better.
The connector is above the rear engine mount.
-
where can buy one from and how much isit?
-
They about 50-70 quid from gsf etc.
Try disconnecting the sensor first if it runs better without the sensor then you know thats the problem.
-
 expensive umm so i got get under the car  lol thanks for that
-
You dont have to get under car.
The connector to lambda sensor is on the left hand side of engine bay should be near the master cylinder its a oblong connector just disconnect that and run engine.
-
awsome ill give it a go

i had the same sort of problem turned out to be the breather it was just hunting for air and then staying at constant rev's like this might be worth a check dont take my word for it
-
which breather pipe?
-
air breather near the throttle body make sure thats firmly in cos mine was leaking and it just kept hunting for air and idleing at 2000
-
all me breathers are tight :O no air leak but the alternator sound like it sucking air in or the belts sound like that :O
-
sorry mate my experience with 16v's isnt very good only owning one for 6 months
