Title: MK3 1.8 Running issues
Post by: D Squared on 17 May 2011, 07:12
Help... my mate has a 1.8 mk3 Golf i think it is ABS engine code, 'M' reg...
It starts up and run ok from cold, but as soon as it starts to get warm it starts to run very rough.. its almost like as soon as the cold start enrichment comes off due to increased coolant temp, it then starts running rough...
Is there any common issues like this that someone can point us in the right direction..? perhaps lambda sensor, or wiring?, single point injection head?? does this problem ring any bells with anyone...??

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

DD

Might be worth replacing the temp sender as a 1st step.

think he has changed 1 temp sender, on this model does the same sensor control the coolant gauge? because i know he has changed that sensor...

Its the same sensor (4pin blue)

This being single point has the rubber mount under the injection unit, ill bet if you cant find anything obvious causing this, the rubber will be split/warped.  they are about £25 and takes half hour to swap, very simple.   Caused me a headache a few years ago, turned out its quite common

So does the rubber mount on the underside used to seal it? and therfore you had an air leak?
I'm fairly sure the injection unit has been off, and i'd like to think they would of spotted that if anything was untoward...

I had my injection unit off 4 times before i decided the rubber seal was perfect and its nothing to do with it... guess what...  it wasnt!   I couldnt see anything wrong with mine what so ever, but i replaced it, and sure enough it worked, although you might notice the hole where the fuel/air goes through gets crinkly/split.   Its worth a go.   It seals its self against the intake manifold and against the injection unit,  also provides a softer ride for the injector, allows it to move a bit.

It's a common problem on ABS engines mate, ive had it myself where it looks fine but it is perished.Go to GSF they do them for £23.Dont forget the large o-ring that goes underneath the gasket.
Here is the part you need.
