Title: Changing crank sensor
Post by: nightroamer on 16 May 2011, 17:57
Hi guys,

I'm trying to change my crank sensor.

I have the engine supported on a jack, and have managed to do the front starter motor / engine bracket bolt.

Any idea what size the bolt through the engine mount is? Seems like a 16 but thought this maybe odd!? Asking as I will need to buy one that size if it is so.

Also what other bolts to I undo?eeek

Anyone have a photo?

Thanks

You've removed the front engine mount correct? There's only 1 bolt holding the crank sensor on, it's a 6mm allen bolt I think.

Are they connected through? I freed off the Allen bolt but it all seem to stay put

Anyone had any experience of removing just the bottom Allen bolt? Will this work?

I removed the front sub frame when i replaced the front mount.

Think its called a front sub frame its just held on by four bolts.

Is it straight forward, or is he engine mounted on it, in which case I can't remove it really

if you mean the front subframe no its not held on by the engine.

Think you will need to undo the allen bolt to remove the front mount.

Thanks to everyone for all the help, managed to test the car with a borrowed sensor and it's working.

Next question, gsf currently sell a replacement for 42.30 but the guy says it's their own brand?! Anyone know who they use?

The alternatives I can find are VDO or FAE both 76.80 from euro car parts.

Simply cannot afford vw it's well over 100.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Avoid their own brand cheapo version as you''l no doubt be changing it again in 6 months. Go for the mid range priced one.

This.

I bought the VDO one from ECP, it was £50 something at the time though

As said steer well clear of the cheaper units as they are bad quality and you will be replacing it again in a few months,I bought the FAE one last year when I changed mine and it's been fine, so go for either that one or the vdo.
