My golf is burning loads of oil :(
I bought it two weeks ago privately from kent
Drove to suffolk and the dip stick was like no oil but it was full in kent.
I bought it with the engine management light on,
Used a snapon scanner and checked faults cleared them.
Hav a lamba sensor and maf fault code.
Would this cause the problem. I've had a service but its still burning it, drove 100 miles recently and it needed 4 litres!
It's not overheating and i dont think the head gasket has gone.
Would fixing lamba and maf likely solve thw problem?
It's a aqy engine
Thanks

Piston rings or valve stem seals would more llikely be the cause tbh.

Part wise is it expensive?
And how labour intensive?
Can using different oil or v-power petrol help?

Yes will be both, valve stem seals is easier to sort.
Can using different oil or v-power petrol help?
Nope, will make no difference.

No.
That sounds an awful lot. Are you sure its not a leak? as that sort of usage would definatly have blue smoke and the exhaust will be black and sooty.
Forte oil addative reduced oil usage on my Celica 1.8VVTI but even that was a lot better than yours. It was 1 litre per 1000 miles.

Yeah I'm pretty certain its not a leak there's no oil where I park it.
I'm pretty certain I don't have blue smoke at the back of the exhaust or soot as well.
I might just see if I can rev it up now and check but I've never noticed it. I will check to see if there's any oil around the sump as well while I'm at it and follow up on here.

Ok have just checked car, reved the tits out of it and there is no smoke at all :)
However there was a really tiny dribble of something on the concreate, if it is oil its very very transparent so its quite a hard call and i don't wanna taste it to find out.
I have been looking at the maf connector as it has been rewired and I'm wonder if it is wrong I tried to measure between pin 3 and 5 but got 0v it might be that i didn't hav a good connection but on someother pins i had 4-5v
I'm going to upload a picture of my maf connector and was wondering it looks right.
For the amount of dribble of liquid under the car if its oil it only presumable does it when hot else there would of been more of it?
Either way I'm going to get it up on a ramp at the weekend and check the sump for leaks

Does this look wired right

The maf will make no difference to it using oil.

Ok thanks :)

it got to be a internal engine problem if it using oil unless u got a bad leak

I have been looking up piston ring problems,
My idle isn't how it should be but this could be maf sensor or o2 as i do have light on.
I have no blue smoke or smoke at all got a mate to watch exhaust as i reved it
The car has failed emmisions on the last mot but this was b4 i owned it and i can only guess they slipped it thought it lol
I don't think it has any lose of power.
But it has two of the symptoms of blown piston rings so i guess it would make sense. Thanks for every1's input :)

What grade of oil are you putting in it?

10-40w Semi
was what it had on the service about a week after it had to b topped up with the same grade but I bought a cheap asda one after doing just under 200 miles and it took 4 litres lol

You need to check the exhaust gas under load, not free revving, so take it for a drive and look in the rear view mirror and put your foot down in 3rd upwards gears.

Ok I will try this on Friday on my drive back to Suffolk,
Thanks

be best to get someone to watch, the oe exhaust points down to the road so you might not see it as much
if its burning that much oil then there should be noticeable smoke even when you free rev it, id say theres a leak somewhere mate.
is the idle lumpy? try putting some redex in the pistons, take the plugs out and pour some in and leave it a while, it could just be the rings have stuck. have you got full service hitory?
