Title: GSF - really genuine?
Post by: nickt on 29 March 2005, 10:11
Just about to order a complete exhaust system for my 8V GTI.  As expected vw is expensive, I save about 1/3 if I get the parts from GSF.  The guy on the phone gives me the impression that I am getting the same parts cheaper.  I noticed on the online ordering two of the parts have (BQ) next to them, does anyone know what this stands for?  After doing a search on GSF I see that some guys feel that the quality has gone down recently.

Any opinions on whether I should spend the extra money, for the peace of mind of getting an actual genuine exhaust for a car that a plan to keep for quite a while or should I trust GSF more?

Nick

GSF are rubbish. I have bought plenty of stuff in the past that is marked genuine parts, however they certainly haven't been of dealer quality.
If you want to save money, go to Euro Car Parts, they are like the old German and Swedish before they turned sh!t.

I use GSF from time to time and have had no problems with them

Just to re-ignite the argument.
No offence intended to some people, but a lot of people won't really know if the parts are of sh!t quality or not.

Anyone spot the difference?
I have seen too many parts of this sort of quality from GSF to convince me to steer clear.
Go to Euro Car Parts instead, highly recommended.

Oh?

I'm about to take my top mounts back to GSF cause they looked like the ones in the second picture whereas the ones on the car look like the ones in the first picture.

Now I'm confused!?!?!?!?!?!?

New mounts should look like the vw ones.
I've also got some bad mk3 top mounts as well

All the parts I have bought from GSF have been fine, and I have the common sense needed to know that a part is not the correct one, even if i have to compare it with the one I am replacing.

Some people may have had problems with GFS, I was just stating that I havent.

well i think its all down to personal choice and a little common sence.

I have had bad buys from GSF, Euro Car Parts and a VAG main dealer.
On the other hand i have also had very good buys from GSF, Euro Car Parts and a VAG main dealer.
It just deepends on what your buying. If you buy some thing and you dont like the look of it take it back, you do have consumer rights. Also double check that the person serving you has not pressed the wrong button and given you parts for a car that is a much lower spec than yours.

About a month ago i bought a new header tank from GSF for £8. i can now see how much coolant i have   when i cant i will just throw it away and get another one

nick. give all of the exhaust dealers in your area a ring and see what price they want and what gaurantes they give. they will proberly get their parts from the same place GSF do. if you are doing the down pipes they are a b*tch as there is no room for a hand and a spanner. i got a down pipe from GSF and it the best price in town but i wished i had got some body else to fit it. :undecided:

Bought a coolant pump from GSF coupla weeks back, part looked 'cheaper' than a genuine VW article, but then it was also less than half the price! You pays your money......etc.

You pay less at Euro car parts than the main dealer, but still get good quality goods....

Hang on a mo i think people are missing the point a little, Any aftermarket product is not going to be better than OE parts from a dealer unless its uprated stuff but that stuff is on a par if not more than genuine parts.
People go to places like GSF for CHEAP parts its never going to be the same as genuine parts and never will be. Life shouldn't always be cheap and cheerful!!!

I put will only ever put genuine part's onto my golf to repair it and i always will do.

Sounds like it

Look at this for example when i got my golf 16v there was an aftermarket front pipe on it fitted only a couple of years ago on the paperwork and this f'#ked up again before the middle genuine 12 year old exhaust gave up... speakes volumes to me makes sense why aftermarket is after market and genuine is proper..... But a euro parts exhaust aint gonna last anywhere near 12 years!!

Maybe vr6 is on commission

Had bad parts from both GSF and ECP.

In fact, I think i had more "incorrect parts" from EurocrapParts. Just trying to think - both handbrake cables were wrong, the front and rear bumpers were - wrong and didn't really fit- the only ECP part on the car is the lower front valance - which is probably wrong if you look hard enough at it.

Next year I'm gonna source proper VAG trim and its gonna cost a fortune.

I would only buy body parts from VW.
Its up to the individual, however personally i have seen consistently poor quality parts from GSF over a period of a few years, enough to convince me not to use them again. Also actually working on my own car, and lots of other people's, i am well qualified to judge the actual quality of the parts compared with parts from the dealer.
However i tried Euro Car Parts last year for my Dad's Audi 90 quattro, and the parts were of top quality.
Not just any parts, we are talking about a set of hydraulic tappets, a front wheel bearing, just some bits for example. If these parts were of sh!t quality then i would of certainly known about it by now.
I'm not actually trying to stop people using GSF, its not my problem, its up to you lot. But don't say you haven't been warned.

I think a bit of common sense is all that is needed when it comes down to finding out if a part is correct and of good quality !
