Title: Mention at least one stupid thing you did to your Mk6 GTI...
Post by: am1w on 15 May 2011, 21:29
I'll start .......

Well, this little incident happened about 6 months ago and it is 100% factual.

It was a dull Monday morning and I was very meticulously reversing into a very tight parking space at work. My reversing sensors cautioned me to stop, but I felt I knew a bit better as they tend to be rather optimistic, so I inched gingerly backwards. Whist this intricate manoeuvre was being performed, a very pretty and young female colleague in an extremely short and tight fitting red dress dropped her car keys right in front of my car. She bent down to pick them up and her pert bottom, which was covered scantly in a black thong, was revealed in all its glory to my prying and delighted eyes.

I must admit I was taken aback a bit, in the nicest possible way, and so was my car slap bang into the wall. The car suffered a badly scuffed bumper and my pride was sorely dented.

Well, it did not end there. She came over to me and admonished me for looking up her skirt. Then, she had the gall to ask me whether I enjoyed the sight. Can you believe such cheek or two cheeks in this case. Further, she accused me of being a dirty old man, a title I wear with great pride.

In conclusion, we have become very, very good friends at last!!!!!

It's good to own a VW Golf Mk6 GTI in Tornado Red.

I stupidly put my car in the garage, unloaded the shopping from the boot. Then from inside the house i pressed the remote to close the electric garage door, not realising I had not closed the tailgate of the car. Heard the door mechanism of the garage door making an unusual racket, went to investigate and found the door had pushed the tailgate downso far and got stuck, and the motor was trying to keep pushing the door down!
Any way I was lucky as only some faint scratches below the VW badge plus one small scratch that needed touching in with paint, could have been a lot worse.

You and your rear end again Asker. And now you're immortalising your guilt on the Internet!

I don't have anything nearly as amusing although the neighbour's Panamera picked up a 4 foot high cock on his bonnet when it last snowed. I nearly lost control of my car I was laughing so hard. The neighbourhood kids. Exceptional attention to detail.

to be fair my biggest mistake was upgrades,

the added power and bigger wheels made it handle like poo, too much for the chassis perhaps ?

still won a few races in it

Well if it's confession time...

Shortly after getting the car I reversed into the garage (bearing in mind that its a double garage) and when the wing mirror hit the side of the opening realised that I might be a touch too close - I said "Oh Dear", got out the car and looked and realised that the door was also nicely touching the garage door frame

Now I was in a dilemma - go backwards or go forwards - which would do least damage? I put full lock on, engaged 1st gear and pulled away from the door and got out to examine the door with a lump in my throat, butterflies in my stomach and a touch of "please no...please no"

Luckily I'd only scuffed the paint and a quick hit with some Menzerna polish and my Makita and it was like new  Unlike the garage door which still has a nice scuff in the wood texture - a constant reminder of my stupidity!

Lesson learnt - and I didn't have any buxom blonde distracting me so no excuse really!

The most stupid thing?

Overtaking an unmarked Pole-eese 5 Series at a speed that will assure me a lengthy period of enforced pedestrian status.

After some proper fast cars and bikes, I get nabbed in the slowest car I've had in years. Doh!
My 'special day' as 'the accused' looms large.
I best make this a good summer, I think.

1) Some might say fitting the Interlagos wheels on my car  :undecided: I couldn't totally love them on the car so since sold them on wasting some cash in the proccess.

2) Reversing into a car behind me in panic when a sodding bus came whizzing round a tight corner that I thought was going to take the side out of my car (the only tit involved hear was the bus driver)

Not pulling on the handbrake fully in the Seat Leon FR.
Half an hour later, noticed the Seat had rolled down the drive into the drivers door of the GTi.
£480 to remedy my stupidity.
Nothing worse than something happening to the car when you have no one else to blame apart from yourself.

As I am the OP, and possibly the most stupid, I've got three more items to share!

(1) Rammed my car into an articulated lorry when I received my first call on my Bluetooth phone system. £600 of damage. Blamed and cursed Darren!

(2) Bought non OEM alloys from Mr.P for new winter tyres, but was told by my Insurance Company it would increase my premium by another £200. Then lost £100 when selling them on to Herr.flc, who, bless his cotton socks, drove me nuts!

(3) Spent nearly £1000 on a set of winter tyres, never to fit them as winter disappeared and they are now stored at the tyre fitters. Must sell them on at the start of this winter. Not necessary in London if I am perfectly honest.

The stupidity will continue as long as I keep Wolfgang.  :embarassed:

Tally ho!

Although this doesn't involve my Mk6 it does involve a funny incident involving blondes, travelling and Germany (get the tenuous link?). And it's also 100% true.
When I lived in Germany I was cycling home from work one afternoon when I spotted a nice German blonde across the road. Unfortunately, as I looked sideways for a quick ogle, I didn't notice the pile of paving blocks they were relaying further up the cycle path. Suffice to say I ran into them and went ars* over t*t over the handlebars in a spectacular somersault. The locals found this very funny - the blonde probably didn't even notice the carnage she had caused!!!! Luckily I didn't hurt anything but my pride and the bike but am1, such is the danger of these pesky women!!!!
At least I was only 20 at the time so she couldn't have called me a dirty old man!!!

Well as we are all confessing;

1. Gave my boss the hairdryer treatment after he curbed the front nearside Monza (in 3 places). Went up to Leicester the next day & scraped the bearside rear wheel up the Kerb :(

2. Set off early to work during the snow. I managed to safely steer the car into the industrial estate where I work. I turned into the entrance but unfortunately the GTI decided to carry straight on. So I ended up slamming into the gate post!

3. Met my parents in Boston the other week. Whilst explaining to Dad how I carefully park the car to avoid it getting dincked, I opened the rear door to his car. Being an older car the door didn't stop 1/2 open & slammed into the side of my beloved GTI, leaving a nice dink mark!!

I remember the slating we got for naming our GTIs.

Term of endearment I think, it means we actually like our cars and think of them as more than just a means of transport.

I wish I'd thought of Wolfgang first - perfect name for a GTI

I named him Wolfgang as the first music I heard in the car was by the great man himself. It was his Symphony no 40.
German and Austrian Classical music are incomparable. At present I'm into Anton Bruckner. Symphonies 4, 7, 9.

Sad.

But true.

The worst thing i have done to the GTI is
Only last week i got the low engine mount replaced with a Vwracing one to stiffen things up a bit,
Causes so much vibration at idle that it is coming off this week and having the insert version fitted instead to see if that causes less, it is a good mod to do if you have got the extra power, stops wheel hop completely and much more responsive when setting off, just cant live with the vibration at idle

Neil, at least now you can pinpoint all the rattles, eradicate them and when your car idles smoothly, it will be super.

That vibration would drive me insane.

Well, if I'm going to have to drag myself into this thread it'll have to involve wheels I guess.
There are two that immediately spring to mind:
Not getting Monza Shadows: the first stupid act was the silly idea that I'd get the cheapest GTI in the country. I like to set myself challenges when I want to buy stuff and that was my criteria for buying the mk6, as I don't keep my cars long (normally), to minimize depreciation whilst knowing most of the things I wanted can easily be retro fitted.
So after a few months of searching and fruitless negotiations I happened accross this silver basic spec GTI with 17'' alloys. Fine I thought, I've got my beloved BBS 18''ers on the mk5 with decent rubber, I'll chuck them on the car and all will be well.
Wrong! They looked a bit plain on the mk6 despite looking sublime on the mk5. If I'd have just got one with Shadows as I'd originally wanted I'd have saved myself a year and a half of swapping wheels about (probably) and just kept the Shadows with a set of 10mm spacers on the arse end.

Next up: As documented already on here, finally I managed to get hold of the elusive BBS CKs I'd been wanting for ages and ages and ages. I fitted them in January, against my better judgement, as I couldn't wait to get them on the car. I then went away on a road trip in February and managed to kerb two of the wheels after having had them on the car for possibly less than 200 miles. Aaaaagh! That set me back the cost of refurbishing two and a full set of new (second hand) wider tyres.

I have already posted 4 stupid things, so I might as well go the whole hog.

If I'd initially ordered the car with the RCD510 + Dynaudio, I could have saved a packet by retro-fitting the RNS510 (which would still sound sh!t on its own) and would only have needed a sub-woofer to get the sound to be acceptable. Whether it would sound as good, better or worse than what I ended up with, I would not know. Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.

But no, I thought otherwise and I ended up spending a packet to nearly get the sound I wanted by having to purchase a separate power amplifier, the manditory sub-woofer and the retro-fit RNS510. I could have sold the RCD510 and be quids-in, sort off.

What really still p!sses me off big time is that the fugly RCD310 when attached to this system sounds bloody sublime.

Never judge a book by its cover.
