Title: engine stalls when coasting to a stop ?
Post by: spudboy6 on 15 May 2011, 17:54
so im driving up to the traffic lights , Oh there red ! , right clutch down and the revs drop to like 500rpm then either the engine stalls or the revs comes back up with a jerk , but at other times it runs perfectly fine ,

did have a problem not long ago with a few things

Right it's a 1.4 AEX 1996/7

Codes up are

00533 - idle speed regulation limit exceeded
00625- vehicle speed signal
00525 - O2 sensor (g39) no signal ,

but they cleared off and didnt come back (they might be back now but my golf doesnt have a ecu light ) will have to check but would these affect it and what would i need to look for / check ?

thanks guys !

clean your throttle body and breather pipes out thorughly, they are probably very gunked up, and can cause the issue you've described.

+1 clean your throttle body and it will feel like a new car :)

I've cleaned the tb spotlessly + with a new air filter and cleaned the mass air flow meter out . New plugs too .

Got a split breather pipe or its gunked up. Mine did the same when I got it.

Also just check all vacuum hoses are ok.

I have had my engine stall twice over the past couple of weeks, started up fine straight away but not ideal as it goes. Can someone show me a diagram or picture with all breather pipes that need looking at please?

The one from the breather block on the rocker box to the crankcase is the one to check.

Pop off the black box on top of the rocker box and take pipes off the disc on the top easy enough but be careful as the pipes can be brittle along with the disc.

Then at bottom of engine its connected with a horseshoe clip, pop that off and pull pipe out again being careful cause they can be brittle and crack/break.

Then give it a good clean with some carb cleaner or the like and then check for splits or cracks. I soaked mine in a tray full of Swarfega for a while and then hosed it down with water and the oil just came out in lumps in the tray.

Hopefully when you reconnect it all it should sort it.

Did with my one, you will know right away, bottom of mine was full of thick oil build up.

Im going to have a look at the breathers Tommrow , bit confused on this disc and rocker box though ?

Re code read my car today and got

0525 O2 sensor signal intermittent

0625 vehicle speed sensor not a plausible signal

0519 intake manifold pressure sensor (g71) signal too low

Have a clean throttle body , have checked the crank breather that's fine , run it and sprayed carb cleaner in the throttle body , so guess I'm looking for breathers to cure this ?

Thanks guys

theres a black box on top of the cam cover under this is where the breathers connect to looks like a disc or flying saucer shape.

02 sensor is lambda fault
speed sensor is crank sensor fault i think. worth checking this to see if the wires are brittle or brocken.

check the vacuum hose that goes to the ECU, as this is where the  MAP sensor lives. Hose perishes etc etc

I don't see this ? All I see is my dizzy on one end the cam belt cover on thee other end and my airfilter housing with a crank breather ? Am I just being thick and missing it ?

Agree, seems like your crank sensor is causing your stalling issues, had similar on my old 16v, wires had corroded.
