Just bought a gti and the only way to start it is by bumpstarting i have been told its a problem with the starter but am not sure so any help would be great
-
Start by checking your battery voltage and then lives and earth to your starter, does it do anything when you turn the key?
-
Ignition switch is very common to fail also, very cheap to replace and pretty simple to fit
-
Check all wiring etc, ignition switch is a very common failure.
-
All the lights come on like the handbrake and oil. Was told that the ignition switch had been replaced a few months ago
-
As Dazzawest said, check voltage at the starter motor. Its the only way you can tell if your problem lies with the motor itself, or if you have an issue further back.
-
does it click, when you crank?
-
i dont think it clicks not that iv heard anyway. There is a droning sort of noise though
-
Droning noise from the engine bay when cranking? Could be that the solenoid failed in your starter and it's not firing the gear out, :undecided: wouldn't of said that would be a droning noise though
-
Droning noise is probs just your fuel pump priming. I take it that happens at the second position on the ignition. Where have you got with it so far? Like I said before, I changed mine on friday and the old one was spinning (you could hear the motor whine, but had a duff solenoid so the gear wasnt firing out to the flywheel. If you cant hear anything, then checking voltage is your only option.

Try starting the car straight from the battery to the starter motor via a thick wire. If it starts u know it's not the starter motor, if it just keeps on cranking over then u know it IS the starter motor!
Just make sure the hand brake is on and the car is out of gear when doing it!!!!

No if you bridge the main live to the small blcak/red wire the starter should turn the engine over, if it doesnt then its broke! if it does turn over then the problem is the ignition switch or wiring.

its all right its fixed turns out a wire had jumped out :embarassed: dont know why the recovery guy never noticed
