Title: abf question
Post by: weazgti on 13 May 2011, 23:12
Managed to secure an abf lump ready for me to pick up in the next few weeks but one thing im not sure about is the air con. What do i do just leave it or remove it and change the belt set up?

Remove it and run a shorter belt.

Tensioner set up from a 2.0 8V motor fits up, IIRC.

Should be easier to find in a scrappy than a non-aircon ABF.

Been doing my homework and it seems the shift box needs slightly modifiying to bolt up under the car. Can anyone shed some light on this? Going for the complete cable change mk3 set up because the 8v one in mine has seen better days.

Seal off the hole and run with the shifter on top of the tunnel.

Would be cool but its a daily so the centre console will be going back in. After searching last night it seems the bolt holes dont line up and ill have to drill or cut out new ones.
Does anyone have a definative answer for the driveshafts? some say driveshafts off the digi mk2 bolt up and some say the ns shaft will but the other side wont.

My answer would be no on the driveshafts, as IIRC the 02A is wider than the 020.

also IIRC (so could well be wrong) the Golf4 shifter is a more compact unit and if bought with the shift tower and cables that does bolt right up.

Spotted a golf 4 up scrappy today. Going up tomorrow so ill have a closer look at that. So the whole lot will fit if i get it all? Can the cables be swapped around for the mk3 ones just incase they dont reach?
Also what car would i looking for to pinch driveshafts?
Sorry bout all the questions but i use this car daily so i need to do it all in one go and not have to worry about getting extra bits.

Ibiza or Cordoba with an 02A gearbox - 16V or TDI.

Or a Corrado 16V or 8V.

You need the long shaft, the short shaft will be fine.

Well i now have an abf in my garden and a wiring loom in my front room.
Started on the loom trying to get lighting loom out, im just scared of cutting anything incase i was wrong and i needed it.
Is it best to cut the plugs for the lighting then pull it all out or should i remove it as one if possible?

Did 02a conversion myself the other day. 16v 02y driveshafts bolt straight up, and I've read 8v/16v mk2 are the same, so... You need to nibble a couple of mm off shifter box so bolts can get in on the perimeter of it, then use 8mm penny washers on the bolts. Takes about 10mins to do. Waxoyl/ paint/stone chip guard it all right up where you file/drill the box underneath. I then covered the lot once it was offered up, jobs a good'un

If i was 100% sure the big yellow plugs were not needed, id chop them off.
But im just going by what i ve seen when i have searched. The thing thats worrying me is the wires that come off the yellow plugs and go into the smaller plugs which i really dont know if i need just yet.
