Title: first time detailer vr6!
Post by: GrandMstRamRod on 13 May 2011, 13:25
recently just bought a vr6 and know nothing about detailing apart from 2 buckets and a sponge, any tips or products that are not going to kill my pocket to get a good wash and shine that can last 2 weeks or so!

this is considering i know nothing sorry if it seems like a whole dumb question just so many products to choose from it seems like a mind field!

I see you already found this section.

First off, don't use two buckets and a sponge. Use two buckets (one hot and soapy, one cold to clean the mitt), and a wash mitt, if Guy catches you using a sponge he will go ballistic.  Sponges do more damage than good.

Have a read of this :afro:

Oh and never use washing up liquid either.

Also here is a guide to claying:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=93439.0

It's the best thing you can do to a car when you first get it, feel the paintwork and if it's not smooth like touching glass, a good claying is in order.

Good man. :afro:

I'll await for a detailing guru to help you with what products to use as they will know what is better suited to your car.

Hi mate - Looks like your wallet is about to get a whole lot lighter ;)

Here's a decent routine but not all steps are totally necessary:

1) Good rinse down with a pressure washer (if you can justify the additional expense later, I recommend a foam lance and snow foam but it's not essential, just makes life a bit easier and much more fun!)
2) Tar remover then wipe with microfibre cloth.  Rinse. Squirt of Iron remover (like IronX or Brake Duster) Rinse (only needs to be done couple times a year)
3) 2 bucket method using a decent shampoo (Dodo Juice Born To Be Mild is great, another option is Chemical Guys Glossworkz - both cost just under a tenner but last forever)
4) Clay the whole car, glass too if you can be bothered.  If you've done the above step, not nearly as much will be removed but worth it anyway, especially if you don't know the cars history.
5) Repeat 3
6) Dry the car (don't use a chamois ) with a drying towel
7) Polish.  You could do a lot worse than Auto Glym Super Resin Polish.  Lots of options with how to apply a seemingly endless range of polishes but unless you have some defects that need sorting, and the time to go down that road, I would stick with SRP.
9) Sealant or Wax - Generally sealant for lighter colours, wax for darker but lots of people mix and match.  Loads of sealants about, AG Extra Gloss Protection is OK.  Wax wise, I personally like Collinite 476s - lasts a long time.
10) The other bits! - Glass, tyres, wheels, interior etc.  I rate Poorboys Natural Look Dressing for plastic bits but I used AG Vinyl/Rubber for a long time too on most stuff.  Any decent glass cleaner followed with a polish like AG Glass Polish.

This probably sounds like a lot of stuff, but for starters, if you want to just have a dabble I'd say:

1) Good wash technique and dry
2) Clay (especially in your case as with a new car you don't really know it's cosmetic history!) wash again
3) SRP
4) Something else be it a wax or sealant
5) Other bits

These are just my suggestions though, there a good few detailing gurus on here who could offer some better advice but have fun and I gaurantee you will suprise yourself at how well it'll come up.  If you do end up using some of the stronger chemicals like tar removers etc, do so with caution; you don't want to do any damage and they are fairly brutal (says the man who stripped off albeit a poorly repaired front bumper recently!).

:)

Nice one buddy. I'll have a look into the super resin polish. I still have to clay mine but may do that this weekend. As for the bumper care, I use that and it's brilliant. :)
