Title: Headlight bulbs
Post by: packardjc on 13 May 2011, 00:22
I did a search but couldn't quite find an answer so...

I want to get new bulbs in my 16v (mk3). Do I need to upgrade my wiring loom or anything, or can I just buy better bulbs? Don't want HIDs, just the H1 type

It's up to you really, you can uprate your lighting loom so that your bulbs get as much juice as possible from the battery but it's not essential when fitting uprated bulbs. Just stay away from HID kits as they'll be a MOT failure soon and race/show spec bulbs that are over rated for the standard Golf wiring loom and could cause it to short or catch fire.

You only really need to beef the wiring if your going bigger with the wattage.

I used to use Nightbreakers in my mk2 and they were AMAZING, but I upgraded the wiring loom at the same time, there was a kit on eBay ready-built. So if I install nightbreakers do I NEED to upgrade it or just put them straight in/?

Massive +1. 90W bulbs killed my headlight switch.

Relay them.

So I was told it was 501s for the sidelights... my fault for being lazy and not checking myself but they're H1s. ffs

So whats wrong with the standard bulbs?
I'm blind in one eye and still find them more than enough.
People with bright bulbs just blind on coming cars.

depends how far in the sticks you are.

Most the rodes I drive on are unlit B roads, half of them have no cats eyes and until recently no road markings, so brighter bulbs were a big help.

Plus it helps identify targets animals in the darkness who might damage the car
