Title: Best size wheels for 1.8 turbo?
Post by: Paul81 on 12 May 2011, 20:01
Guys!!

Most of you probably know I got my new Golf last weekend.
I'm looking at a change from the standard 16's to either 17's or 18's.
I know 18's will look better, 17's will be more comfortable & slow the car down less.
What is everyone else's opinion & why?

Cheers!!

Get a lightweight 18'' and you wont notice any speed dofference between them or the 16s. BBS RC are the lightest OEM wheel

Or drop it slightly on bilsteins and eibachs, nice light wheels with grippy tyres, do rear ARB and drive it like a GTI should be. If ya gonna cruise and run gash stretchy tyres (just my view) get a 1.4 as itll be too low to enjoy it

stevelfc - I would like it lowered but my previous Golf was lowered and i had a lot of problems with speed bumps, i guess it depends what options i have, 20-30 mm should be alright

vwfiend - Good theory but the only wheels im interested are the 2 styles from the mk5 R32. How much is the drop on bilsteins and eibachs?

andc1 - Sorry mate im a noob. What is pokey out back, flush up front and stretchy tyres?

rolty_gti - I like the sound of this, do you have any pics of your car with this set up?

Grand Master Patch - There's no way im getting 19's lol

About 40mm I think. Same as Rich911's I believe.......... To be honest, the wheel weight difference between the mk5 r32s and RC's isnt worth worrying about. What is is having to either buy adaptors to make the wheels fit as the PCD is different.......... Or reps..........

My previous mk4 Golf came with mk5 R32 alloys already on, as far as i know they just fit straight on

I have drove 10000s of mk4 1.8T and IMO 17" rims offer the best all around feel for power.

I still think a mk4 looks better on 18"s however 17"s can feel better to drive.

Do you have any problems at all with speed bumps?
Also what kind of springs are they and have you changed the shocks?

To be honest with you i have no idea what springs and shocks they are as i bought the car as it is now but will find out 2mrw as i'm doin some work on it so will let u kno.as for the speed bumps i have no trouble but i do slow down as i dont wanna rattle the wheels/suspension etc and dont wanna rip the bumper off.it isn't really low it just lowered ebough to take out the massive arch gap lol.go for 18's with 35-40mm drop you wont regret it
