Title: Hall Sender..What does it do?

Hi, I've had a diagnotics on my GTI 8v 1996 due to what seems to be a miss fire, it found this fault "00515 Hall Sender G40 signal outside tolerances" Can someone tell me what the Hall Sender actually does? Thanks in advance.

its to do with ignition and is on the distributor, its to do with advance and retard i think
