1996 golf tdi 1.9 1Z GL with PAS, no aircon. Standard engine, standard suspension, 15x7" wheels..
So lately, it has felt like the PAS is really straining and maybe struggling when in use it low speeds, such as when parking. It doesn't feel like it "assists" as much as it used to either. Checked the pipework for leaks and nothing and the fluid is completely fine. The belt was replaced with a cambelt change about 4 months ago and this problem has only started being noticable in the last month. Belt tension feels fine.
Any ideas? Things to check? While it's not causing any problems now, I'd rather be pro-active than reactive!
Thanks!

Bleed the system and see if it makes a difference

get it up in the air and see if the wheels turn themselves when the engine idles, had a mk3 with pas problems with and turned out to be a bent stearing rack over loading the system on a full lock.

Replace the belt just to eliminate it from the list. I know it's only 4 months old but it doesn't mean it's already slipping. A new belt is only a couple of pounds.
Otherwise I'd suspect the pump is starting to fail, and the propeller inside is wearing fast.
If you're interested, I have a pump for sale http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=192223.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=192223.0)
