If you notice a spam thread please click the 'Report to Moderator' button rather than reply to the message
A few times I've noticed a lengthy thread whereby members have replied to the the spam yet no one has reported it
The sooner you report the spam, the quicker we can delete the feckers!
Cheers

Are the spam posts generating high levels of spam for the administrators, then?
-
Not at all, I have been after some expired tramadol Elescitte for ages now.
-
Something simple like a validation question to stop bots signing up would stop this surely!
-
Just to add.
Thanks for keeping the reports coming in. I know it's annoying, but we are trying our best to keep on top of it.

Why keep on top of it if it can be stopped all together
-
How can it?
-
How can it?
Is it bots signing up I presume? Just a simple question like "How many letters are there in GTI" placed in the sign up form to prove it's a human signing up.
Or something like the Enhanced Captcha script?
-
I don't reckon it's automated. Well a lot of them are, some of them though are far too good! Have found a good sign up mod though so going to install that and see if things improve :)

This is an easy method I have studied - http://www.steadiforum.com/register.php
Funny enough I am thinking of doing my dissertation on Automated Spamming Bots, effects and prevention.
Can you also add something to catch stupid people/chavs out please?

Image one is nice :afro:
Have set a couple of questions as well as that basic captcha thing.
Interesting project that :)

Its very simple as well.
Yeah it's going to be a package to protect sites like forums and blogs from the wrong type spider bots and spam bots.
-
The more we talk about it the more spam pops up
-
Just looked at the 'awaiting activation' list and there were about 30 just today that were clearly junk.
Lets see how it goes in the next day...
-
Thats all I do on the RTTS forum John, delete un activated accounts!
-
Unfortunately adding questions, captcha's, images or combination of questions and images like the one you showed Adam will only be circumvented by spammers who use bots that request human interaction if they can't get past the the signup page, that's assuming the signup is done via bots and not by an Chinese spammers who have 100's or 1000's of people signing up to forums, once signup is confimed the system adds it to the spam list and the bot then logs in and does it's thing.
For every step taken by admins to try stop spammers, there will be a way to get around it and the 'hardcore' spammers have already automated systems dedicated to get around these antispam measures, some of which I've listed above.
The only real way would be to use AI in the forum software watching every post looking for tell-tales signs of spam and blocking it before it's written to the DB :nerd:
-
Jay, your giving me ideas for my dissertation :)
-
Glad to help  Here is some more... spammers are like Malware authors, they always find a new way to do what they do and deliver it as quickly and efficiently as possible - time is money after all - and any new spam prevention tech that becomes popular enough will get circumvented as they update their automation systems and processes. The only way to control it is to be draconian, which puts users off - enter ED38.

I knew there was a reason I have never joined Ed38!
