Title: FVWSH and extra value
Post by: pben47 on 11 May 2011, 09:47
Hi Guys,

I'm looking at a 08 GTI at a dealers, 22000mls, it has a full service history, but the last service its 3rd was done at a Vauxhall dealership.
Would this be perceived to lower its value now or in the future? The sales guy reckons it won't affect future warranty etc.

Thanks,
Paul

My understanding was that it had to be serviced at a VW dealer to keep its warranty. I'm not 100% sure on this, the dealer you buy it from (and therefore will have the warranty with) will be able to tell you this.

As for lower price, the second my car was out of warranty it has never seen a VW dealer. IMO VW dealers are a bunch of useless monkeys. Mine goes to an independent VAG specialist garage for all its service and work. It may well effect the price a tad, but not by much. Id rather lose a little price wise and know its being looked after than send it to VW.

Any VAT registered garage can carry out the servicing to maintain the manufacturer's warranty

It was brought in a few years ago as people were complaining about being ripped off by having to have their cars serviced at main dealers

Personally as long as the car has been serviced and has all the receipts etc it doesn't matter who serviced it.  My old Golf I had an A4 lever arch file full of every receipt for every part I bought for the car  :lipsrsealed:

The third service is really just an oil change.  It's the 4th that is a big one.
Which reminds me to go out and top up.
They do use oil don't they though.

Longterm (5 years) it may impact VW "goodwill" on big known items like the ABS pump or AC compressor:

You are looking at a 2008 car, so I think it should have a "good" AC compressor, not sure about the ABS pump.

I would extend the VW warranty.

in fact any garage can service it, as long as they use VW parts (not heard of the VAT thing), this was EU directive I believe.

but other peoples points are valid about good will etc.

strange they went to vauxhall, perhaps the guy worked there, as I cant imagine it would of been much cheaper?

Well the purchase of the 08 GTI went pear shaped.

I am now looking at a private purchase. The car has extended VW warranty until mid 2012 with the current owner, my question is, can this be transfered to the new owner? Also if there are any future warranty claims does it need to go to the original dealership where the warranty was purchased or can it be taken in to any local dealership?

Thanks

Any dealer will honor the VW warranty.

There is a small fee to transfer the warranty into your name, like £20 quid or something. Ive got the details and can dig them out if you want. Theres a pull out tab at the back of the warranty book to transfer owners.

But yeah any dealer will honour the warranty.
