Going to look at a 1.8 mk2 gti 8v tomorrow anything in particular i need to look out for?

Rust Rust Rust and Rust, check everywhere properly. Lift mats up and check footwells and check the chassis thoroughly ALL THE WAY down the car, this should include sills.

filler cap, bottom of doors, rear washer / wiper, front wiper blank

they are main prob areas easily spotted

the sunroof drainage channels down sides of windscrren can rot too
