Title: Mk3 Gti 2.0 8v - Starting Problems
Post by: Jb-Dub on 10 May 2011, 18:44
Hi,

I have a 2.0 8v gti and its been sitting for a few months, and its having starting problems.
i have changed the battery, coil pack, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, and plugs, also had the aftermarket imobiliser removed and chucked some new fuel in with some additives to make it that little bit more combustable.
It will turn over fine and then start, but soon the needle on the rev counter gets up to around 1000 revs it dies, ive tried it many times and the same thing every time.
Just wondering if any one has had this problem or know what the problem is??
Would be a massive help

Cheers
Jb

Ignition timing is your best bet

Was it running fine before you parked it up?

Is it dying after only a few seconds? Crank sensor fault it often wouldn't start at all.

Not true, quite often with crank sensor failures the vehicle will run fine until it's warmed up and then will often cut out when reducing speed when driven eg. approaching a junction etc.

It can also just happen whenever.  My Anni had a crank sensor failure. Admittedly when the engine was warm it was worse, but it can cut out when doing 60mph (like I was). Mine wouldn't start at all sometimes even when cold.

Fair one, I guess there is always gonna be a difference between a total failure and a partial failure also, like breaking down coils where they warm up etc.
