Basically the questions in the title.
If youve done it yourself whats the shopping list and prices.
Just looking if its viable for a summer project while I use my cabrio for the warmer weather.
-
I think this has been asked a few times before, and the answer usually is
Too much, buy a 1.8t and put that in instead
-
Yep 1.8t is the better option.
Good thread: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=124485.0

As always in this place never an answer that people actually need!

The thing is to do the job to the correct standard including standalone management plus all the extra parts will end cosing the same if not more than fitting a 1.8t.

Okay, admittedly we have all been there. Don't want to part with our motor, want some more power so lets ask/research about turbo/supercharging the 8v..
It's a stupid question, the price you could spend doing that would be the same as doing it to the 16v or even the VR6 same money more power..Okay people aren't asking for financial advise, but when we are in a society were things are getting expensive, you want the best for the least.
By all means go down that route, we're just trying to advise you that you can get more for your money

Jumping on this thread lol
I really want to super charge my 8v gti as it's only done 29,000 miles and I really want it to look like vw made a mk3 G60.
Could I use any G60 parts to do this?
Or is it all custom bespoke work?
I ain't worried about what is cheaper or what is better. I want a mk3 golf 2.0 8v G60

You would be better to fit a G60 lump tbh, I would add that a G60 would not be my choice as the superchargers need a lot of looking after.
-
Saw a guy in southampton selling a g60 engine and all the gear for 1500 quid on clubgti..
Dunno if its a straight swop ..
-
I've been looking at this too as it seems that every man an there dog is doing a 1.8t an its putting me off a little. Also you've gotta love the g60 whine
-
Reckon you could get it cheaper too.
Would be a good project if you went down the super charger route..
-
rotrex charger?
I'm even thinking about sorting the vr6 and selling that to fund it
-
Can't see why you couldn't do it with a 2.0 8v as engines look the same. Although you would need to lower the cr. Also there is a few g60s out there making good power.

Why not sell the 8v to fund charging the vr.....it'll give you a bigger smile.
-
I wouldn't put an older G60 engine into a newer car, plus as Wayne has already pointed out, the G60 charger aint great.
If you was gonna do the 2.0l 8v, this lot would be a good start
Lower compression - about £200 for the head spacer
M62 Eaton Charger, M45 off the mini wont cope very well with the 2.0l engine £500 bare minimum
FMIC, pipework, brackets etc around the £300 mark minimum
After market engine management loom etc anything up to £800
Custom outlet manifold, downpipe, sports cat and full new exhaust £500 minimum
Bigger injectors £?? not cheap tho
So thats just off the top of my head and are only aproximates and comes to around £2500
Almost forgot, a worn 020 gearbox will probably only cope with about 160-170bhp so if you want more than that find a better box, more money
I would love to see this kind of build and have contemplated it myself many times but I aint got that sort of cash and even if I did.......................................................................
I probably wouldnt do it
-
Spot on Ben :afro:
-
Cheers Wayne, like I said, thought about it lots but just isnt worth it in the end, would be a good build tho

The thing is for £2500 it is never worth it, when you look at a 1.8t and how easy it is to get more out of it.
-
Yep, stick a 1.8t in, get it re-mapped, even put the ko4 on it and would still cost less than £2500 and see well past anything the 8v could achieve
Also the vr6 T would be around the same cost, including buying the engine, and give you much more power, also sounds FECKING amazing
-
Good post Ben. I think thats cheap lol plus I would buy low comp pistons.
I know what your saying guys about getting more hp for the money. But a mk1 gti will set you back a lot more than a mk3 gti and the mk3 is a better car. Sometimes you want something and the cost of things doesn't really matter.
Charging the vr would cost me 50% more than charging my gti.
If I wanted speed and fun I would buy a evo 4 for £3500 but I would rather spend that on my golf

Well said mate I'm totally with you on this one.

Although a mk3 with low mileage like yours is always going to be a rarity, mk3 gti's in general will never be collectable, a special one like yours might hold it's value or even increase slightly over time but as a stand alone car it is only really worth anything to you or another mk3gti fanatic so i think the idea of using it as a basis for creating something a bit special is a great one, and the fun is in the creating, not the creation.
Most people never recoup anywhere near the cost in time and money on a project car, they do it for the love of it and to create something a bit special.
-
totally agree

I think mk3 Gtis will definitely be collectable, everyone said that back in the day about the fiesta rs turbos, and the r5 turbos when they were everywhere, If you've got a good mk3 keep it, it'll be rare when all the others have rusted away

I think that will only apply to Anni's, top notch Valvers plus Vr's.
-
I don't think the 8v will ever be collectable, it was bottom of the 'GTI' range anyway and not a well loved car when new, now that most of the good ones are in the hands of enthusiasts they can be made in to the cars they should have been at the start, but collectable?..i don't think so.
In fact i would say that the 8v makes a perfect 'project' car, plenty of cars to choose from, cheap to run and fix and you don't have to ruin something rare like an anni/vr and to a lesser extent a 16v.
-
I think your right guys but try finding a anni/16v/vr in same condition as mine, that hasn't been restored.
Also in 10 years you think petrol is going to be cheap?
I do agree with you but I think a top spec 8v gti will just be as desirable.
-
I'd like to think so, i have a very tidy 3dr 8v on a 'p' with only 125000 on the clock and history going back 13 years and 2 other family members, it looks great, drives great and i love it to bits but i really don't think it will ever be a 'classic'.
-
Neither do I, lets be honest only the mk1 & 2 will ever be worthy of the status 'classic' due to the fact they both made such an impact in automotive history. The mk1 for been the first real 'hothatch' to put into production and the mk2 for taking the next step in refining and improving what was already an innovative take on economic yet sporty motoring.
Where does the mk3 really step up from these two?

Most would say that the mk3 is where the golf gti went off the rails.
-
As much as love my mk3 I do kinda agree. I still wish I had my H-plate Oak Green 16v mk2. Definitely the best car Ive owned and Ive had at least 30.
