Title: Exterior Trim - Back to Black
Post by: 16vmk3ash on 08 September 2003, 21:07
I have a mk3 16V and the exterior trim is Grey!, i dont know if some models have grey trim or are they all supposed to be black?

Anyway i have tried using simoniz back to black but this doesent work and autoglym plastic cleaner (this gives the plastic a shiny dark grey finish) but i still cant get it to look black.

Does any1 know of a product which will restore my plastic trim to black?

Its probably supposed to be dark grey, its too new to have faded that much.

I saw a tip in a mag that says ;-gently heat the plastics with a heat gun,of course being ultra carefull!
I did some plastics that i got from a scrappy on sunday. They had what looked like a paint on which i had to remove with stripper, before i used black shoe polish.
The back to black  'temp' effect can be acheived by using wd40 or the one of the same.-and MUCH CHEAPER .

try turtle wax extreme interior and exterior trim cleaner, worked a treat on my 83 campaign, dont put too much on though and avoid paintwork as its hard to remove.

All the exterior trims on any GTI are black. They just fade to grey when out in the sun.

I also saw that tip in "The Golf" and was wondering if anyone had tried it. I'm a bit reluctant to heat the plastic and besides I haven't got an extension lead that long.

I've heard that old engine oil rubbed on and left to soak in works a treat.

Heating the plastic - surely if the sun causes the plastic to go grey, then a heat gun is gona do the same?

Thats exactly what I was thinking, I think its more the ultra violet in the suns rays that makes the plastics fade rather than the heat.

so do you rekon once u have got the plastic back to black, applying sun tan lotion to it would prevent it going grey again?

Just a thought!
