Title: mk2 running hot?!!
Post by: newlad on 03 May 2011, 20:15
hi all, new to this forum and just bought a vw golf mk2 gti 8v, she'e a lovely example with only 110,000miles,
i might be wrong but when ever i've run her, she seems really hot, the temp inside sits at the 1/4 mark and the fan comes on when she goes above this and brings her back down, but when you pop the bonnet, massive heat wave, just wondered if this sounds familiar to you experienced gti owners? or have i got a problem? if so, any advice very welcome!

Sounds like it is running hot  :undecided:

I think the fan is also coming in to earlier, might be an air lock.

Check the cap on the header tank, if the seal is gone it will boil and the fan will play siller buggers. Swap it for a later blue cap or seal it somehow!

it is the blue type, and does seem to fit very snug, when its hot, the water level is raised in the tank and the pipe coming off the radiator is very tight, like it wants to pop

That does'nt sound like a problem. Engines get hot. The temp gauges tend to read lower (like a 1/4 when hot) with age, a new sensor would put the gauge nearer the middle.

Unless there are any other symptoms, it sounds ok.
Any oil or water use?

i only bought the car on sunday so i'm still getting to know her but the oil level is on the minimum, the sump gasket needs changing and i'm not suspisious of the oil, i had to top the water up the monday morning after buying her, again, just a drop and hasn't used any since,

anyway, tonight i drained the water out of her and run a hose through her, alot of dirty water passed through, i then filled with water and put some flushing agent in there, i had her running for a long time to try and get the air locks out, gave her a run and came back, the car wasn't half as hot as she was the night before, it says to run for 50miles then re-drain and fill with anti-freeze mix.
maybe just blocked/obstructed pipes or rad? i really hope so, will keep you posted, might just change the thermostat anyway,
thanks everyone
