Hello guys I have a Mrk 4 golf 1.6se and really want to GTI convert it as I coulnd't get insured on a GTI. I have been told to convert my Mark 4 I NEED to change:
-The mounts
-The drive shafts
-The brakes
-The suspension
-The gearbox
Is this true ? and is there anything else I need to change (am new to the forum and am not that mechanically minded lol, so any advice will be great (: .)
Thank you all

Engine loom. Might want some gti clocks. would be easier to get a wrote of gti and swap everything over i should think. And i would swap subframes as to make it easier. Hope that helps

Appreciate it mate !

No problem, just thought it would save you money as buying all the parts seperate would cost more. My mate did that mistake with his abf convetion on a mk2.

:undecided: how will insuring the conversion be any cheaper.

Find a writen off rear ended gti and transfer everything over thats your best bet better if you have someone mechaniclly minded to help you

Some how I dont think he is planning to, i take it the plan is swap the engine and keep it logged as a 1.6

I hope not as that is plain daft and will only end in tears.

Couldnt agree more. With labour cost, parts, time etc, in the end it will be cheaper to sell his car and buy a gti and save for the insurance.
But if thats what he wants to do then good luck, it'll be a good project. I cant say that when i was younger i didn't think about doing the same with cars ive had, but i just couldn't justify the risk of doing it if i got pulled and had the car crushed for void insurance, not to mention if i hit someone, or my car got stolen, i mean how would you explain it to the insurance company if it got recovered.
"Hi there sir, we've recovered your car, only its registered as a 1.6, and this seems to have a 1.8t in it"
"yes the thieves must have stolen it, thought it was a bit of a flat turd and swapped the engine for a quick get away" - i think not :smug:

If your set on it, theres a project thread on here for a 2.0 gti swap to 1.8t would be similar
