Hey, new to this site, great to see so many geeks like me so besotted by our Golf GTI's. I've had my Mk 5 for 5 yrs now and still love it. I have some clouding on my alloys which I have had refurbed at Pristine Wheels in Milton Keynes over the last few yrs but this 'fogging' has come back. Any suggestions where else to use as they have this diamond cut which rules out many refurb companies? East Midland area? billyboy :)

It does not matter who you use, with this type of wheel finish it will always come back.

Great link that :afro:

As above, common problem with clear lacquer. As above, you're better off refurbing in a different finish if you don't want that effect.

Yeah they are a pain mate. My mate has 18inch monza's and his were prone to going a mess so he got them sprayed silver.
Its for sale now actually 51,000 £9250 which is good seen as it is in MINT condition. Have a look..

93,000 miles is alot more though. Still looks nice haha.
wouldnt say the DSG is essential mate as the manual is very good gearbox!

the best way to cure this problem, is to have them referbed again , take away the chrome, and spray in silver !! i did mine myself a few weeks ago, and fair play they look great , cant even tell they are not chrome !!

look better in the flesh to dean, i spoke to minty and he wants to keep his 18's so got to find someone to refurb them now.
anyone know of any problems encountered when trying to refurb these monzas???

4 18" Monzas just gone in for a refurb back to diamond cut factory spec at A1 in Wolverhampton, will post results.
GTi looks a bugger with the steel wheels they've lent me for the week, broke my heart to see it. Almost considered coming to work this week in the Mrs' bright blue Pug 206!

Will make it look even better when you get the Monza's back though :afro:

Getting a clean edge on the inserts even painting the whole wheel. If diamond cutting and relaquering use some that's trusted but the White worm will be back.

Yeah I'm pretty resigned to that, but I'm planning on getting rid next year anyway, thought I'd give the buyer one less thing to try and knock me down on, so I want to try and coax them through until then. Anyone got tips for minimising the effect?
Mine got really bad through a lot of motorway driving (30mins daily), not cleaning enough, and I used to use alloy wheel cleaner and a wheel brush.
I'm assuming washing regularly (particularly in winter to get the salt off), and perhaps laying off the acid will help, but have even heard of people coating their alloys in stuff through the winter.
-
yeah you can get an alloy coating but i wouldnt know how resiliant it is against the causes of the worm

Had mine done free by the dealer and it doesn't work. It only delays, and motorways, salt, changing a tyre even all knock the lacquer. Keep a set for shows in immaculate condition once refurbed and get something different for daily?
I CBA TBH! They still look good from a distance and once I've had enough I'll refurb em if I've not got bored of the car before that point

Reporting back as promised following refurb back to manufacturers spec (diamond cut plus grey inserts) at A1 Wheel Renovations in Wolverhampton. Great experience, got the alloys back in 5 days, and they even supplied a sexy set of steel wheels to run about in during the week. Finish is great, if anything perhaps not quite as bright as they were originally but fantastic for a refurb and well worth doing over buying a new set. I would heartily endorse the place if anyone fancies maintaining the original look of the alloys.

First photos on my iPhone only and will be taking some proper pics on my digital camera, if anyone considering a refurb has any requests of closeups etc while they're still brand spanking just ask and I'll see what I can do.

Thats a top job they've made of them !
-
How much did it set you back to get them refurbed, all mine need doing.
-
The standard price I was quoted was £85 per alloy I think.

Seems a fair price, look forward to more pics.
