Bit of a strange one. Using the car last week I I tried to get reverse, but it wouldn `t go in.
Initially, I thought it was the selector cables, but I opened the bonnet, manually pushed the selector weight down and moved it into reverse. Starting the car and lifting the clutch and it still goes forwards  I`ve had a passenger go through the gears and I am 100% I`m trying to move it into reverse, rather than 1st.
When pressing the selector down, it doesn`t go all the way down, I`m sure it did before.
The gear selection feels like it is reluctantly going into reverse, but it isn`t actually engaging the gear.
I removed the shifter tower and checked the oil level, it needed a little bit adding, but not much. The shifter tower looks fine, nothing bent / broken.
Any suggestions ? I`m guessing its something inside the gearbox, but just thought I`d ask.

never met that problem on an 02A before. be very suprised if it was a gear problem, may be worth swaping the selector tower over for another if you have one hanging about to see if it makes any differance

I don`t have another. I`ll go to the local scrappies and see if I can get one from them.
Does seem very odd
