Title: Standard clutch or dsg??
Post by: maxload on 30 April 2011, 11:35: First off what a great forum :grin:

In the next few months im looking at purchasing my first gti (saving my deposit now , i'm so exited) It's gotta be a mk5, fantastic looking car! Problem is do I go for a standard clutch or dsg?
Is there any difference in performance?
Are there any difference in running cost's?
Interested in what you guys think.....

Having just bought my first gti a month ago, I had the same dilemma but in the end settled for a manual box. I sat in a dsg model and just felt the paddles were too small and tucked away, plus with my missus driving it as well, she wasn't too keen on the automatic. I think I'd miss the manual gear change and the control that comes with. I'll probably get shouted down by those with dsg, which to be fair probably makes the car slighter quicker through the gears, but personally I'd stick with the manual.

Post by: stealthwolf on 30 April 2011, 17:30: Don't let that put you off. I read something similar on a US forum when DSG first came out and somebody had done 40k miles. Turned out to be the mechatronics unit. At the time, it put me off DSG. Now I sometimes wish I had one.

You need to find out if the unit has been replaced under warranty or not. If not, probably stay away. If it has been replaced, them you shouldn't have any further problems. Also need to make sure the DSG gearbox has had its own separate service.

That is definatly something I will look into. What do you guys think about overall performance. Is the dsg any quicker or is it a matter of taste?

You need to sit in a car with DSG and get driven. I sat in my mate's ED30 and from the moment he hit the throttle, there was no lurch or high->low rev noises as the car shifted. Just smooth acceleration all the way up.

Dsg is quicker to 60, and is better putting the power down then an overzelous right foot..and slamming left foot on the clutch.

If your buying, make sure you have warranty of some sort for atleast a year. Most problems are either that the cars been sold with the issue and its outa warranty, so it becomes someone elses problem.

Rarely after long ownership does a Mechs unit show signs of issues. early 05 cars and cars in the 57/08 had issues, but most were/ have been resolved with the manufactures warranty.

Its great fun, you can buy aftermarket shifters if you think the oem ones are too small. Mine are carbon fibre TID styling ones, and are superb.
I drive everywhere in manual now, rarely in D unless in a traffic cue, which unlike manual, doesnt get used lol
Both great, but test both for at least an hour to get a good feel.

Exhaust noise the dsg cars makes is also very addictive. Especially if you add a Milltek exhaust system.

Post by: mossy1969 on 01 May 2011, 19:00: hi there i test drove a dsg before i bought mine about 14 months ago,i thought the dsg was fantastic smooth and very responsive in changing gears ,but i coundnt hang around for the colour i wanted a manual candy white 5 door and it was local,an audi dealership nearby,manual is still fine tho ,but you have to way it up ,if you drive in traffic a lot definatly go for the dsg i would without a dout ..still its the best car on the road by far
