Title: 8v GTI - drilling air box
Post by: tomScotland mk3GTI on 30 April 2011, 03:20
Have had a search and seem to be finding varied opinions on this, so whats the best way to do it? I have a pipercross filter in there at the moment and a sportex back box - I just want a little induction noise. I know its been asked a million times before but I'm hoping one or two of you will have actual experience and feedback on it.

Basically, how is it done *properly* ?

Don't drill it, cut all the fins.out.

This really has been covered a million times on here but basically all you want to be doing is smoothing the route of the airflow but making the intake pipe wider and clearer, adding a short trumpet on the inside of the intake and  removing all the ridges/ fins inside the box.
Attach a cold air intake pipe to the inlet of the box routed either into the wing opening or down towards the front bumper, these few things will then gain you a couple of extra bhp and a happier and more responsively revving engine for not much money.
Personally im not into the whole drilled  / hacked lower airbox thing but you can do this is you so desire to the inner wing side of the lower box to give you more induction noise.

Smooth it out inside and remove the tumpet.
4 holes using a 40mm hole cutter, 2 in the wing side 2 in the bottom.
On hot days or long stints in traffic tape em over with duct tape.

With Petrol the price it is I would just smooth it.
