Title: 16v gearbox/clutch
Post by: mk2bal on 29 April 2011, 17:33
A while bk my car stopped wanting to go into gear when stationary. To bang it in reverse makes an awful crunch, but from standstill to get 1st I have to switch off, engage gear, and start with the clutch down.it still creeps forward slightly. The clutch is an uprated sachs one, fitted 10months ago, and it all seems fine otherwise. Today I put in a new pushrod (mine was 2mm shorter) new rel. Bearing and end cap. It made it a lot worse. Starting in gear with clutch down the car pulls v hard, too much to hold the brakes really. I've swapped the old rod bk in, and I'm bk to where I was before. Creeping forward, and unable to get into gear stationary with engine running. When driving, changing up is ok, but changing down I have to hold it near the gear for a long time until I'm going v slow and it pops in..Any ideas as to what it is? I'm guessing box, but do also think it maybe the clutch itself still...?!anyone suffered the same and found a cure??

Don't be silly that's been done numerous times. Its probably worse with no slack in the cable than it is with 10mm free play like it used to... The arm raises to the 9oclock position as it should, it all feels fine etc, it just doesn't work..when going into gear with clutch down its almost like your not pressing the clutch. Also when engine off on stand still all gears select 100% fine..

I don't think it's silly. I think it's got to be the clutch. What else can it be?

Maybe some part of the kit isn't as uprated as you expected, or you haven't bolted it up together right? What else do you think it is?

I meant clutch adjustment.which I presume you mean on the cable, which is silly because it has to come off to do the bearing, so has been adjusted a few times now.. Yeah I'm guessing part of the clutch has failed, if a new (longer) rod worsens the problem, somethings got to be dead in there. Going to keep driving it while I can, and build up an o2a conversion on the side ready to slap in...

Its not where the clutch cable goes through the bulkhead is it. Not really heard any issues on a mk2 but on roccos and MK1s the bulkhead goes and when you push in it just crumples and the clutch doesnt work. Just because Its rare on a mk2 doesnt mean it wont happen, worth a check

Nah she's sweet, its all solid round there and properly seated. Its not free play. The cable pulls as should, the arm lifts from 9oclock position etc, rod moves, its just the clutch/gearbox isn't doing its job.. Clutch FEELS fine under foot, and is fine in gear, and is 10month uprated item, so that's why I think box is a possibility maybe? Neeed to split it all and take a look, main oil seal on crank  needs doing big time anyway so gotta be done. Just wondered if anyone else has replaced a pushrod and found engaging/disengaging worse!! And then found a cheap solution??!!
