if i was you id replace the ball on the end of the relay shaft first and see how much play that removes before doing the ball n socket

relay shaft ball is a 10min job and will remove about 75% of the gearstick play

the only advice i'd give is to do each bush at a time so you don't forget how things go back together!!! also if you got the one with the big orange bush you can just push it out and push the new one back in you dont need to drill out the old rivets  and do it that way.

Hey Gambit,

Do you have the part number for the relay shaft ball?  I've got a cup and ball waiting to go on, but would like to take your advice and try the other first!

you cant buy it from VAG itself they make you buy the complete relay shaft. i got mine of a fella in the US. only took 3 days to arrive and is easily paid thru paypal, total cost about £15

you just need to buy the UHMW set. Teflon is only for extreme conditions i.e. racing

noticed there that he says he aint doing anymore orders till 16/4 - so you might have to wait a while!

Thanks for that.  Looking at the pics on his site, I realised I am missing the outer casing altogether.  No wonder I have so much free play in the shift!!  Might be a trip to the scrappy to find an interim part until I can order....

Just had a flick through Google and came up with this little gem:

www.busdepot.com

Have ordered the whole link piece for $20 including postage to UK.  Very happy (or will be when it arrives.....)

No, it's the relay ball and bar which move in the shifter bracket.  If that makes any sense......! If I could work out how to insert a picture I could show you!
