Title: iPod
Post by: GolfTi on 28 April 2011, 20:49
I've been using my ipod in the GTI for the last few days due to a drowning accident with the Sony Walkman.

The stutter at the start of tracks (RCD510) is still there and very noticeable. I've just bought a replacement 4GB Walkman for £30 as the other one was faultless until its water resistance was tested a little too far.

Just wondering if anyone has actually managed to find a proper solution to the ipod stutter problem.

I do like my ipod and would probably use it in the GTI if a definitive solution were found.

I use my ipod in the car all the time with no stuttering at all.  I have an RNS510 so don't know if that would make a dfference.

What age are your cars as there has been a software update. Which can be downloaded from http://www.my-gti.com/category/reference/firmware-updates

No idea i don't use an Ipod. :embarassed:
But depending on the age of your car or if you have a VAGCOM/VCDS scan to say what software version is on the unit in your car, depends on what update you can use.

Its a fix for problems and as there updates it more than likley fixes issues older versions had.

Mines 0090 so i could install the latest one on the page. My cars a Build week 06 of 2010 if thats any help.

I get the exact issue, it's like the first half second of the song skips.  I seem to remember there is a way of fixing it but it means that you have to re-do every song on iTunes.

With that in mind I'm now getting used to it.

Something to do with crossfade in iTunes. It doesn't work.
I spent many, many hours trying to sort this with all sorts of file types and bit rates and different ipods.

USB sticks don't work reliably, probably due to no battery back up.

I have my 4GB Sony Walkman, 2 GB SD card and 6 CDs (re written to give display text) - great for me

I went from RCD510 to RNS510 to a replacement RNS510 and all had the stutter.
Also all present with various ipods we have in the house. Last count 10 so its had a good selection all with the problem.

Also depending on what ipod I use, it also depends on whether the display updates or not when the song changes to another track.

The changing of the display name on the head unit is definitely significant in this.

With the ipod Nanos that stutter, I can skip a few tracks so that the next song that is about to play won't update the display name and the song won't stutter. So I've found my stuttering is related to the display updating.

I updated my MDI firmware and if anything it slowed down the use of the ipod but didn't cure the problem.

I also told VW about it at my service last year and was told they were aware of it but had no fix at present.

I read about the crossfade in itunes but haven't had a chance to try out. I've just resigned myself to using the Hard Drive but you can't beat to ipods interface to find the song you really want in seconds.

P3asa , So you tried the latest firmware for the MDI listed on the link i posted, launched week 45 2010 fitted from week 22 2011 and it made it worse?

No Snoopy, I never looked at your link sorry. Just presumed (wrongly) it was the one I downloaded previously from the my-gti site last year. I never realised this one was just literally out.

But yes the previous firmware upgrade slowed my ipod down to a crawl. To a state it is so frustrating to use. You press the scroll bar to go down the list and it seems to go down one entry at a time very slowly so if you have thousands of songs its a nightmare.
It was absolutely fine before the upgrade. Just as zippy as the ipod itself.

I'll download the firmware you posted and try it out as I have nothing to lose. I'm working this afternoon so will report back later.

Steven.

I done the update and the test folder of music I have made up with all the tracks just being 15 seconds long, played without any stuttering     Skipped through a good few tracks and there was a very slight hesitation when the tracks changed. An awful lot better than before.  However I then couldn't get out my test folder no matter what I did. I had to unplug the ipod and plug it back in and I could then get out the test folder.

I'll try it out over the next few days and see what I think.

I've just done the update too.

Tried it out today for 30 minutes or so. Seems OK, I'll let you know after a few days.

I have just updated to the 0150 firmware and its solved the it can't remember which song/folder I was listening too for the 2.5" 500Gb Western Digital drive I use.  It used to always go back to the start once the ignition key was removed and its now solved. Woooo Hoooo.

The stutter is still there, it happened a few times today.

Back to the Walkman.

Cheers Snoopy. This seems to have stopped the stuttering with my iPod / RCD510 combo.

Update works with one of my memory sticks, but the other is the same as before, reverting to the first song in the first album.

Maybe the update sorts some problems.
It does not sort the hesitation/stutter/pause at the start of tracks.

It has done on my ipod. If that's what you're using then post some of your itunes settings and I'll compare them to mine to see if that's a possible issue.
