Hi all, have a few probs that some of you can no doubt help with.
Car is a 96 agg engine 2 litre 8v.
For a while now the car has been cutting out when cold but runs fine when warm.Just recently i fitted nightbreaker bulbs to my hella quads and it seems to have made the problem worse at night if i have'nt driven it all day but go out in it once it gets dark. It's always o.k. after it warms up though.
Anyway,up untl last night i thought it could possibly be a cold start valve or something in that area but last night i went out in it at 1 am this morning to asda's.Roads were quiet and it went well apart from the cutting out when cold.
It was'nt until i got home that i noticed another change.(Where i live it is very noisy in the day time so i was only able to notice this sound because it was very quiet at that time.)
Anyway, got home, pulled up,turned the lights off, windows up,stereo out etc but engine still running.I could then hear a sort of whistling/himmimg noise coming from the engine, seems to be coming from the drivers side (i was still sat in it).I revved it up a bit and i noticed that as it revved down it would pop a bit through the exhaust.Iv'e noticed slight popping sound since iv'e had the car (over 2 years) but not noticed it like this at low revs, not as much anyway.
Iv'e recently changed all the belts and fitted a new cambelt tensioner,iv'e done about 1,000 miles since these were done.Iv'e also done an oil and filter change and cam cover gasket change plus a new alternator belt pulley.
When i did the cam cover gasket i also replaced the cam cover itself to a newly painted one so i had to fit a new seal for the breather. When i fitted that seal i noticed some grey coloured sludge in the pipe that goes from that breather at the top of the engine to the hose that goes to the front bottom of the engine, where the two join. It's a sort of creamy oily stuff.
This worried me a bit as i started thing "head gasket" but there is no water in the oil nor is there any creamy stuff in the oil filler cap.(not when i last checked anyway)
Car has done over 150k and i have virtually no history on it.Iv'e used it every day since i got it 2 years or so ago,it's never let me down. The only thing i have really had to do is occasionally top up the oil and water although i think the oil loss was down to leaking cam cover gasket,no idea about the water loss (about a pint every 6 months or so).
I thought i'd post this here as i'm just about to go out and have a look to see if i can see anything obviously wrong since i last checked.
I will post back later if there is anything else to add.
Any help or ideas on what's wrong or what to look for would be much appreciated. My thoughts so far are possible head gasket, lambda sensor, alternator.I'm thinking it's more than one problem.
Thanks for reading this.
