Right so speaking to the mechanic guy today about the cutting out and he said he would clean the throttle body for me. I said I had been doing some homework (asking you guys) and been informed that if it wasn't that it could be the crankshaft sensor.
So he tells me it doesn't have a crankshaft sensor. He said it has a distributor and no crank sensor.
Can anyone enlighten me?
He did agree with me about the air leak though and said he would find it.

what car is it and what year?

P reg 1996 golf GTI 2 litre. I dont know whether it is a 8v or 16v though. (How do you find out incidentally? other than the log book which I am still waiting to recieve)

 you bought a car and don't know if it's 8v or 16v did you look under the bonnet?

Looks like an 8v to me. AGG engine code. There should be sticker on the cover on the left hand side of the engine block (as you look in the picture) behind that breather hose.
-
Thanks!! Do you know about the crank sensor dooh dah too?
-
Yes it's agg and crank sensor is behind the oil filter.
-
my crank sensor was a git to replace. awkward to get to and it was solid. i took the oil filter out to get better access

Yeah mine was the same, you have to remove the front engine mount, that's easy and sounds easy until you round off the Allen key bolt that's been in there for 13 years, which I did

As mentioned, if it's a 96 and like the one pictured above it should be an AGG engine which will definitely have a crank speed sensor. They're a very common fault on these engines as the cable breaks down and crumbles away due to the heat given out from the engine block and oil cooler that it nestles between.
The part should cost around £50 and a garage shouldn't really be charging much more than an hours labour to fit it be honest.
