Hi all,
I have a vw golf 1.9 tdi 90hp.
Over the last two days I have noticed the MPG isn't as good as it used to be. It seems to be spending alot of time in the low 20's under acceleration and at idle or no load it levels off at 45.6 whereas the screen used to go blank.
What happening ? am I just being paranoid.

Serviced lately? fuel and oil filter change prob wouldnt go a miss..
Could be an MAF problem or something like that.

sounds like you've changed what the display is showing
use the rocker switch on the end of the wiper stalk to cycle through the options

I've miss read the information..
As rhyso said you have changed the display setting from MPG to average MPG..
Generally in the mpg setting the display will go up ad down all the time where as in the average MPG setting it will prob just stay arround the 45 - 50 mark judging by the info you supplied.
I just leave mine on average all the time. I think the average MPG has like a circle with a line through the middle of it, I could be wrong..lol

Thanks for the suggestions guys but I seem to have fixed my problem.
I removed the EGR Valve today and there must have been a few CM if build up around the inside. Cleaned off and re-fitted, hey presto my MPG is restored.
My journey homes average MPG has gone from 33 to 47 today.
Without sounding ungrateful, i understand how the gauge functions work !
