Title: Need quick help
Post by: Justins145bhpMK1 on 08 September 2003, 13:17
Hello all.

Further to my thread of last week my MK1 appeared to have a flat battery, after having a look this isnt the case at all.

The starter motor has worked itself loose and is hanging by its wires. Lost both the bolts, does anyone have a couple of bolts or know the size of them or anywhere other than vw that i can get some... help im off the road till it gets sorted!!!

Sorry for the lack of 'quick response' but I should have some bolts.
I'm sure you've said before, but where are you?

Bad news I'm afraid, I have 3 but 1 has a knackered head and the other 2 have knackered threads...........sorry. Now that I think of it I can remember looking at all 5 when I was fitting my starter motor and picking out the 2 best ones.

Can't your local dealer order them in for you? Might be quicker and easier in the long run.

My bolts are off a 1983 1.8 GTI and they are 130mm in total length (100mm shank, 30mm thread).........sounds like you've ordered the right ones.

I've just found it. Its under engine/securing parts for engine items 18 or 19

M10 x 135mm     N 044 760 1
M10 x 150mm     N 044 742 1

Mine probably are nearer 135mm long, I only used a steel rule.

does this mean I need one thats 135mm and one thats 150mm??? They are on backorder at VW so at least a weks wait..aaarrgh!!!!!!!!!!!

The ones that are securing my starter both appear to be 135mm long (Can't be certain without removing them). They definitely aren't 150mm and I don't even have any that long in amongst all my spare bits and pieces.

thanks rich, I shal have to wait I guess unless I can get some from a specialist fastner company. I shal have a look on the web.

Your part munber ties in with what I was given from vw so must be the right one.

Here is the ETKA:-

I reckon from that, you need one of each but thats not what I have fitted. Thats not to say that what I have is correct though. Anyone else?
If they aren't too expensive (which no doubt they are for what they are) might be worth getting a 150mm one too.
