Hi Folks,
Last night Lewy very kindly helped me sort out my top shock mounts. However all was not well. The replacement ones I bought from GSF don't appear to be the same as the original ones and so he very kindly gave me some struts off a standard MKII (1.3 I think) that he was breaking and their top mounts. Also my rear shocks need replacing as does one of the fronts.
I need to replace all 4 shocks and while I'm at it I might as well drop it with some new springs. The Golf is supposed to be my daily driver and so I don't want fancy/expensive stuff. What is the cheapest combination of shocks and springs that I can get for it? I'm looking to drop it 40mm as 60mm is too much for a car that is used for carrying mini engines etc. SO would a standard set of replacement GTi shocks from GSF and some drop 40mm springs do the job and be the cheapest?
Sorry for the long post,
Nick

How cheap is cheap spend wise ???
£150 ??
or could u stretch to say £300 ??
-
bilstein/ventura kit from ECP is about £175 and will lower 40mm
-
When I say cheap, I mean CHEAP! I want to spend as little as possible as the Golf is supposed to be a daily driver on which I spend nowt unless really vital.
The ECP kit sounds tempting. Had a look on their site and it works out at £209 inc VAT and delivery.
GSF do a bewildering range of shocks so I'm not sure which ones would be appropriate and they do Drop 40mm springs for £50. GASF is useful because I can pick bits up as there is one local to me.

For instance GSF offer a BOGE suspension kit for £159+VAT which includes struts. Does this include loered springs as if it does that's quite a bargain?
Or I could get a full set of thier Gas Damper (Whatever brand they are) and some drop 40mm springs for £156 + VAT.

Try these guys http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/
They do a Bilstien Streetline kit for £178.50 inc VAT - not sure how much that can lower though
Other than what has been suggested why not keep an eye on eBay?? You might be able to get a bargin !
-
i'd go for the boge ones as they are a similar set up to the bilstein streetline(?) kit form ecp. and that should include springs as well. basicly with a set you get shorter dampers to go with the lowered springs so you don't bottom out. not something you have to worry too much about with just a 40mm drop but if your gonna be carting around engines, with standard height dampers and lowered springs your more likely to use up the damper travel. at the end of the day you get what you pay for and if you want to go cheap as possible it may just be easier to get gsf's cheapest standard shock and springs and not bother lowering it?
-
That motorworld kit looks good value for money.
CHeers for all your advice guys I'll keep looking around and let you know what I end up doing.

Right spoke to GSF and they do the BOGE suspension kit for £159 + VAT and that includes drop 40mm springs and complete front struts. They also do the set with just inserts for the front at £149 + VAT for the sake of £11.75 including VAT I might as well get the complete struts.
This would seem to me to be the best deal unless anyone knows any different.

go for it mate, thats a good enough price in my opinion!
-
Don't buy the GSF kit, it is sh!t.
-
In what way is it Sh!t?
Like I said before the Golf really is just a workhorse that I want to look a little modified, but all my cash needs to go into the mini to keep it competative.

golfvr6 has a thing about GSF and their supposed sh!t quality. i cant say as ive never had any of there sachs/boge stuff
-
One front spring shorter than the other, shortened springs without shortened dampers, ride ROCK hard.
Do you want me to carry on?
-
Like I said the other night Nick, the Ventura springs from GSF I put on the wifes Polo makes the ride bloody hard, so I would presume the kit they sell would include these springs, as they are relatively cheap.
Have you cosidered standard shocks and the Eibach springs, it'll bring it down about 30-40mm and suit the OE shocks a treat. I have ridden in a few cars with standard shocks and eibachs, and the difference is negligible.
-
Stuff it I'll get the GSF kit and see how it goes. I'm fine with rock hard suspension from the years of driviing the mini sat on the bumpstops.
-
Why not buy standard kit from Euro Car Parts?
-
This is why I am asking the question.
The Eurocarparts kit is £206 including postage. It's £20 more and I wasn't sure if it was any better value for money.
-
I got the streetline kit from ECP with ventura springs and bilstein shocks and I can't complain about them at all. Have you spoken to Stuart at ECP in Leeds as he will give you 10% discount for ordering from this site ?
-
Really? That makes it the same price as the GSF kit!
Coooooool!
(Excuse my excitement I may possibly have had a couple too many in my lunch break)
-
awesome gti have a sport kit for £192 all in!
-
Cool cheers!
-
dunno what make they were but they must have been cheap a warning on cheap springs made from tin and painted red look at the photo need i say more.

Interesting thread. I did a bit of digging around myself. I too have a daily driver that I wanted to lower a little (cheaply). I was going to go for the Bilstein Streetline kit from www.awesomegti.com (http://www.awesomegti.com), until I picked up some Eibach springs, brand new, in box, with paperwork for half price.(30-40mm drop)
I'm glad to hear the standard shock should work well with em, (fitting em soon) hope the ride isn't upset too much, and I dont bottom the shocks out too often!
I do have a question though, my car looks quite saggy as it is, especially at the back, is this likely to be worn bump stops, does everyone reckon I should replace these when swapping the springs, and how about swapping for new Boge shocks from GSF too?
Cheers.

^^^ replace a s much as you can afford to do to save you doing it at a later date. none of it is that expensive and it'll transform the ride of your car..............!!!!!!!
-
Well i got cheesed off missing group buys on different forums, and getting fobbed of by people selling brand new coilovers, that I decided to buy some Avo fully adjustables. They came delivered at £530, and I could only get the FK's for £600ish, and as Avo have a massive WRC background, I thought I'd give them a try - oh, and they're british, mind you so was Austin Rover - oh sh1t!!!!
I'll be fitting them this weekend along with the Powerflex bush kit, and hopefully I'll be sober enough by sunday to test it out on some good old country roads  !
-
Lewy CHANGE YOUR TOP MOUNTS!!!!! sorry to shout but it's a b!tch of a job on the front and you don't want to have to do it twice like what I have to!!! because that is just a royal pain in the arse. good luck!
-
Lewy picked up some G60 top mounts at the same time I believe.
Fitted my kit last weekend and I'm well chuffed. Car is much lower and the ride and handling much much improved. Would adding a strut brace under the bonnet be the next step?

ive been told to get some new top mounts as well.
Where could i buy some?
-
Dunno I need to do mine and i want polyflex really but dunno where to get it whilst I'm at it might get a full bushing kit for more go kart like handling.?? any ideas guys i've heard corrado ones are a better type of rubber/?? :undecided:
-
No worries Monza, like Nick said I replaced the top mounts with the slightly heavier duty G60 ones. I fitted the shox today, and wow what a difference - well the old OE ones were foooked so anything is a bonus. It felt so tight, like a brand new car, all I've got left to do is fit the new ARB's and the Polyflex bushes. I haven't had any time to really test it out, but as soon as I do then I'll let you all know.
