Title: stripey laquer?
Post by: weazgti on 23 April 2011, 21:34
Been outall day spraying laquer on a mettalic silver panel with a rattle can but everytime i do it it looks like its got dark stripes in it. Its more noticeable at certain angles and its starting to p*ss me off because ive redone it  3 times today.
Would the laquer compound back so its all the same?
The base coat looked fine.

I suspect that you've been bollocking the lacquer on very wet, because of the heat, and trying to get a decent flowing finish... this is a problem with cheap acrylic lacquer, it tends to go cloudy when built up too quickly...
You may also be seeing a problem called "Floatation" this forms in the basecoat, and on lighter colours is usually invisible to the untrained eye, but is magnified when given a few coats of lacquer...
In my experience, today was just too warm to paint, especially with acrylic aerosols, wait for a temp drop to 15 to 22, and build up in lighter coats...

Re paint, and re lacquer, only way out of it...
Carefully re flat the parts, here's the bad bit, if you break through the lacquer, you could have problems re applying the basecoat without it reacting with the previous attempt, so prepare very carefully!! grey Scothcbrite should be used to re key the paint...

just done it again but still stripey like a reaction or something.I tried to flat first before i saw your last reply so i think i ballsed it up.
Think i did go through the laquer in  places because the stripes are in the same place everytime.
What should i do now? sand back and primer to stop this happening again?
Would upload a pic but havent got my phone lead with me

Rear quarter on a 4 door. It had laquer peel so i sanded back till smooth then went from there applying basecoat again and laquer.
Should i of primered it first?

A rear 1/4 panel is asking a lot from aerosols!! it just too big to get a decent finish, If you want to try again, then you would be best off taking the paint that you've  applied off, by either sanding, or rubbing it off with some thinners on a rag, (not recommended!) then re priming and painting... But in all honesty, I think you'll end up back where you started

Cant beleive it. its showing through primer.
Whats next? bare metal it?

The 'stripes' are probably in the base coat as some of the metallic particles aren't laying correctly and it probably hasn't flashed off.

To rectify it you'll need to redo the base coat and lacquer and chances are it will react.

You need to lay the base coat down in light coats almost dusting it on and do a drop coat on the final coat of base coat then when its flashed off do a grip coat of lacquer followed by 2 or 3 good coats of lacquer.

As thom89 said you're asking a lot of arsehole cans as most pros struggle with silvers and even some manufacturers silvers you can see light and dark bands

Any Qs just ask

Cheers Marc

ok thanks. I redid base coat but same again with the laquer, figured like you say its was reacting so i flatted off and primed only to have it showing through the primer. At this point i got p#ssed off having done it about 5 times so i left it then took it back to bare metal a few days later. I ve got primer on and so far it looks ok.
The stripes were like dark lines before.

I would say the stripes are where the basecoat isn't flowing out due to being from an aerosol and its getting more mettalic in some places. The fan on a can is very narrow so try to do lighter coats but overlap your passes more... 75% overlap or similar. As thom said, its asking a lot from an aerosol, once you get the basecoat sorted do plenty of coats of clear so you have lots to play with when you flat it back.

Ah just realised something. The paint i got mixed at the paint suppliers wasnt the same as normal. It was thin spray much like a halfords can whereas normally they really blast out and cover nicely.
Your mention of the overlap just made me realise that.
Could i have got a can not pressurised enough or wrong spray nozzle on it? It did spit  on a few times.
Wouldnt tackle something as big as a rear quarter with a wanky halfords can  but the paint from this supplier is normally brilliant with great results.
I sprayed bumpers ont his car with a previous can from them with loads of laquer coats on to cut back and they look spot on.
