Title: Standard Susp for non turbo GTi and GT TDI
Post by: charri42 on 23 March 2005, 00:01
Hi Folks,

I'm ideally looking for a 1.8t gti or 110 tdi for the motorway journeys, just had a query re. suspension.

Am I right in thinking that it was a factory option to upgrade the non turbo and GT TDI to 'sports suspension'  and 16" alloys?

I seem to remember this being the case when I looked at buying a Golf new in 2000. Does this mean the non turbo GTI and GT TDI comes with the wallowly standard Golf suspension??

Cheers...

Don't know if this will help but I have a 130 gt tdi and was running it on the standard 15'' alloys and I thought that it was realy bouncy. I invested in 17'' alloys and that seemed to solve the problem.

cant speak for the gt diesel versions as im unsure, but the early 1800cc 20v gtis came with standard golf suspension, and 15" wheels with 65 series tyres, this could be upgraded at the factory to the same set up (26mm lower, the golf 1.8 't') suspension set up, same dampers etc just slightly shorter springs, the 15" wheels could also be upgraded but im not sure what to? wether it was a different style of 15"s or 16"'s)

either way, if you are considering lowering a non turbo gti, always choose the springs for the 1.8 t model, because it is lower than the standard setup of the non turbo you will get (for example, 40mm drop springs) you will get about a 66mm drop in height which is good and will rid you of 'oil rig' status!!
