i would've thought it would be the same one for all mk3's, not sure which one that is though?. I forgot to ask, does the software clear the faults?

it may clear some faults, but it cant clear all faults i.e abs light coming on as that will requirea  part being replaced

Being new to the Golf world. What the hell's a VAG-com lead. Is it a diagnostics thing?

The lead itself is nothing special. Just an OBDII with either serial or usb at the other end (serial preferred). You need to buy the software to clear the faults/make changes or download the free trial version that has limited uses.

www.ross-tech.com is the place to look, email the guy with any questions he's actually very helpful.
