Title: Simple Ipod Connection Question!
Post by: ferris on 21 April 2011, 14:51
I know on the new Golfs they have an ipod /iphone connection hole, but where do you get the lead that connects them to the ipod?
And can you operate the ipod from the normal CD player controls?

I may be open to correction but my understanding is that you need the MDI ipod connection add-on (optional extra) to be able to fully control the iPod with the steering wheel and radio controls.

The standard-fit AUX socket is pretty much like a headphones-in jack, which will only allow you play whatever audio you've selected manually on the iPod itself through the radio. Not sure you can control the ipod  (play, next/prev, etc) with the steering wheel via AUX.

I may be wrong!

Ipod comes with the GTD as standard and you get the leads included in the price of the car, works as normal throught the touch screen

Your not wrong, if you connect through the aux then as you say you can't control anything as it's like using your speakers as headphones but the GTI/GTD,  as Doc said comes with an ipod mdi cable and a USB mdi cable which is connected inside the armrest, these cables allow you to control from the head unit/steering wheel.

Ahhh, but unfortunately here in Ireland the MDI connection is not standard, so I have ordered it as an optional extra! However, strangely enough we do get some items here as standard that I don't think you guys get, e.g. folding mirrors, cruise control, tyre pressure monitor... those ones just off the top of my head.
