Just have a read of this:

Shocking IMO.

Yeah, this one hits close to home for me. They came at 1.30 am & the shocking thing is that I was downstairs at 12.30am!! It's the keys they are after & no amount of security will stop them if they have the front to do this. I still don't sleep soundly at night & we've now moved. Good news is nothing was taken..... This time! Take care & sleep with your keys.

Typical not shocking.

Sad reflection of today's "you've got it, I want it" element of society
They did the same to me when I had my Mk4 GTD - only a couple of months old at the time and not garaged - luckily heard them trying to force the glass at the side of the front door.
Didn't get anything but made a bloody mess of the door frame.
Unsettled us both for a few nights but never really bothered me that much afterwards. Luckily car is garaged out of sight every night now

It's very sad, this happens far too often.
I have a cricket bat ready at the bottom of my bed.

Yep, happens far too often.
My dad (for some as yet unknown reason to me) gets up nearly 2 hours before he needs to leave the house in the morning and whilst being nosey out the window found some yob with his head in my window and trying to open the doors. With cup of tea still in hand (which he claimed he would use as a weapon, I say he forgot he had it and just took it with him) he ran out the door after him.
Luckily I've not heard of anything since.

Thing is, what can you do. This is not car related, but someone broke into my house, I kicked the living sh!t out of them, obviously protecting the misses as she was pregnant. She lost the baby, which is a slightly different story. The cops charged me, went to court and I was close to getting jail time, instead I got good behaviour and community service and of course a brand new shiny police record.
Judge said I should have left the house and called the police. He didnt take too kindly when I asked him what planet he was living on.

I cant imagine to begin thinking how frustrating that must have been, I got annoyed just reading it.
The court system is laughable in this country, I wont go into them as they are quite long winded but I saw the 3 people before me in court and the punishment they got compared to me made my blood boil. Becuase I earn money, pay tax and contribute to the system, lets f**k him over and charge him loads whilst some little sh!t who turns up in a f**king tracksuit has his £5 a week taken from his EMA (which I pay for already). ARGH !!!! (http://www.onelaughhaveit.co.uk/images/smilies/1892_mad_smiley_banging_head_against_a_brick_wall.gif)
Sorry, went on a bit of a war path there :D

Golf's are one of the most knicked cars, here in the UK and abroad.

I know our cars are only Golf but how the f**k is the Vauxhall Vectra number 1 !?
Hot hatches seems to mega popular. On several police programs I've seen R32s, STs, VXRs and Type Rs all nicked.

So true. About time we adopted the american view on this sort of thing. Your on my property i can defend myself by chopping/blowing your head off... Your trespassing and its your fault if something nasty happens to you. The cheak you get if a teenager or less is on your property as they know theres nothing you or the police can do.

.... and I'll add Simon's awful experience to this thread:
